at The Department of Romance Studies and Classics. (Closing date: 15 April 2022.) Prolonged - new closing date: 22 April 2022.

The Department of Romance Studies and Classics belongs to the Faculty of Humanities and has about 70 employees and 3,000 students per year. For many years, Romance linguistics has been a leading research area with the following specialisations: discourse and interaction analysis, historical linguistics, editorial philology, sociolinguistics, second language acquisition and education, syntax, semantics and translation studies.

PhD students can participate in the Faculty's Doctoral School, which offers interdisciplinarity courses and cooperation across subject borders.

Project description
The dissertation will be conducted in Romance linguistics within the languages for which we provide education: French, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish or General orientation.

Qualification requirements
In order to meet the general entry requirements, the applicant must have completed a second-cycle degree, completed courses equivalent to at least 240 higher education credits, of which 60 credits must be in the second cycle, or have acquired equivalent knowledge in Sweden or elsewhere.

In order to meet the specific entry requirements, the general syllabus stipulates that:

• the successful candidate has passed advanced level courses of at least 30 hp in French, Italian, Portuguese or Spanish including a degree project of at least 15 hp,

• the candidate possesses knowledge of English equivalent to the level English 6 (does not apply to students with university education with English as requirement).

The entry requirements must also be met by persons who acquired corresponding skills within or outside Sweden and by the deadline for application.

Selection
The selection of applicants who fulfil the entry requirements for third-cycle studies of this kind with specialisation in French, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish or General orientation is the applicant's capacity to complete such studies. The selection is made by the department board based on the following:

• General previous education. The assessment takes into consideration the depth and broadness of previous education.

• Earlier scientific production. On the basis of first-cycle and second-cycle degree projects and other scientific production, the applicant's capacity for completion is assessed according to critical ability, analytical ability, creativity, independence and scientific diligence. The assessment also takes into account the time aspect, i.e. the extent to which the applicant has demonstrated the ability to complete previous scientific assignments within given time frames. Assessment is also made of the applicant's academic development from comparison between scientific productions.

• Research plan. In conjunction with the application, an account of the intended research area must be given. It must contain formulation of problem(s) and a description of how the research will be conducted. The research plan is assessed based on relevance, originality and feasibility within the given time frames (corresponding to four years full-time studies for a doctoral degree and two years full-time studies for a licentiate degree).

• Cooperative ability. The applicant's cooperative ability is assessed based on references, certificates, interviews etc.

• Additional. There are strict requirements regarding applicants ability to adequately express themselves in academic French, Italian, Portuguese or Spanish. Assessment of this is based on previous scientific works.

In the selection of applicants to a third-cycle programme with specialisation in French, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish or General orientation the department board considers the regulations of the Faculty of Humanities.
