Work Integrated Learning (WIL) is University West's overarching profile and basic principle applied to learning, the exchange of ideas, and educational development. The government has assigned the distinguished task of developing WIL to University West. Work integrated learning in education and research develops new, relevant and advanced knowledge both within the academy and among its partners, which also benefits society in general. University West offers a wide variety of study programs, has a good number of applicants and the students show a high entry rate on the labor market. The main research environments at University West are Production technology, Learning in and for the new working life and Child and youth studies and is conducted in collaboration with the surrounding society. Campus is centrally located in Trollhättan with about 12,000 students and about 600 employees.

PhD Studentship in Production Technology - Specializing in thermal fluid simulation of additive manufacturing process using electric arc and electrode metal transfer

The research divisions in the field of production technology at University West (PTW) host a research school in Simulation and Control of Material affecting Processes.

Among others, they have a long experience in modelling, simulation and experimental study of laser and electric arc heat sources and Additive Manufacturing with metal wire (AMw).
In additive manufacturing with electric arc heat source the metal wire can also be the electrode. During the deposition process the metal melts, flows down, deposits to form a metal layer that solidifies and partially re-melts when the next layer is deposited. This layer upon layer metal deposition process aims at building 3D-geometries such as turbine or centrifuge components. This research activity is conducted at University West by a multi-disciplinary research group combining thermal fluid mechanics and electromagnetism (process study), mechatronics (process control) and metallurgy (deposited material properties study).

This doctoral student position is in the field of metal deposition with electric arc and electrode wire to study the process using computational thermal fluid mechanics. It thus involves liquid and gas flow in the presence of three phases (solid, liquid, gas) and phase changes, electromagnetism, metal transfer as well as tracking of the liquid free surface. The aim of this research work is to gain better process knowledge along the metal deposition. The gained knowledge will also be a valuable input for other researchers developing process control models and coupling deposited material properties to process parameters. The doctoral project will thus include collaborating with researchers specialized in measurement methods, process control and metallurgy. The research is application-oriented and will also be conducted in close collaboration with industry and other universities within Europe.

The scientific work in the project
The project aims at better understanding relationships between properties that can be measured during material deposition and how these properties influence the process and the built component properties.
It concerns in particular the evolution of the temperature field along time, the formation of defects such as pores due to gas entrapment in the liquid metal. The doctoral project has a thermal fluid mechanics approach (heat transfer, metal melting, flow and solidification) with process computational simulation (finite volume method) and validation of the results based on provided experimental data. The work will be also coordinated with process control and metallurgy scientists to bridge the gap between the in-process control and the structural integrity of a final build.

PhD degree program: Production Technology

Job description:
The research program includes, in addition to participation in third-cycle courses and other activities, implementation of an independent thesis work. Doctoral students shall primarily devote themselves to their own education. A doctoral student may, however, be engaged to a limited extent in education, research and administration, mainly within Production Technology. Such duties, before a doctorate has been conferred, may not occupy more than 20 per cent of full-time working hours. (Higher Education Ordinance (SFS 1993:100) Chapter 5 section 2).

Qualification requirements: please read 3.1 and 3.2 in General syllabus for the third-cycle programme in Production Technology, Ref. No 2015/1343 B 25: https://www.hv.se/en/research/research-education/production-technology/

Selection: please read 3.3 in General syllabus for the third-cycle programme in Technology in Production Technology, Ref. No 2015/1343 B 25.

Qualifications of merit for this position:

- Master of Science (or equivalent level) in fluid mechanics or equivalent
- Knowledge in fluid mechanics and heat transfer
