At the School of Innovation, Design and Engineering our students are studying to be for example innovators, entrepreneurs, illustrators, information designers, network technicians and engineers. We have five research specializations with different research profiles and research schools. Our work takes place in cooperation with and in strategic agreements with companies, organisations and public authorities in the region.

A full-time employment as a doctoral student is attached to this third-cycle studies which corresponds to four years.

Position description
The position primarily involves doctoral studies where the candidate, independently but with support from supervisors, will plan and conduct scientific studies in the field of medical and health technology. Specifically, the doctoral project aims to contribute to the development of technical systems that can measure and support the assessment of human health status. These systems may be intended for use by already ill individuals, where it is important to diagnose and monitor health status, or systems intended for use by healthy individuals for preventive purposes, facilitating the maintenance of health and enhancing well-being.

Key areas in the project, where the doctoral student may work with one or more parts, include user-friendly sensor systems for health data monitoring, reliable health data measurements and data communication in distributed environments, as well as reliable distributed signal processing and AI.

The doctoral education includes both literature studies and empirical studies, scientific writing of articles and dissertations, dissemination and oral presentation of research results, and participation in doctoral courses.

As a doctoral student, you are expected to take responsibility for planning and conducting your studies, take initiatives to develop your ideas and knowledge, and collaborate with others both within and outside academia. Teaching or other assignments may be included in the position up to a maximum of 20%.

The position is part of the interdisciplinary initiative Human and Technology, Health Technology, where researchers in medical and health technology and information design meet and collaborate. As a doctoral student, you will also be part of the research focus Medical and Health Technology.

Qualifications

For basic eligibility, the following is required:

• A degree at an advanced level.
• At least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 are at an advanced level.
• Equivalent knowledge acquired in Sweden or abroad through other means.

Specific eligibility requirements for admission to the doctoral program in Medical and Health Engineering are:

• Acquired at least 45 higher education credits at the advanced level in medical technology, electronics, computer engineering, computer science, robotics, information technology, or an equivalent technical subject.
• Acquired essentially equivalent knowledge in some other way, within or outside the country.

A requirement for the position is good oral and written communication skills in English.



Assessment criteria
Prior to employment, consideration must be given to the ability to assimilate third-cycle courses and study programmes at a higher education.

Knowledge and experiences that are meritorious:

• Design and use of sensor systems for health data monitoring
• Design and implementation of studies for measuring physiological parameters
• Data communication in distributed environments
• Reliable distributed signal processing and AI

In an overall assessment of suitability, emphasis is also placed on personal abilities.
