PhD student in Materials Physics
formally based at Thin Film Physics Division at the Department of Physics, Chemistry and Biology, IFM
Duties
As a PhD student you will primarily devote yourself to your research. As a PhD student you are limited to work with education and administration up to 20 percent of full time.
The project, you will be involved in, will focus on novel group III-nitride semiconductor structures intended for the next generation power electronics applications. Your specific duty will be to perform advanced characterization of AlGaN/GaN interfaces grown on GaN andSiC substrates via metal organic vapor phase deposition (MOVPE). The interface structures will be characterized at the atomic level using cutting-edge analytical and in-situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) methods at LiU's microscopy laboratory. These investigations will emphasize the atomic interface structures, structural defects, compositional profiles, thermal and electrical stability as well as degradation mechanisms. The PhD project will be part of the Center for III Nitride Technology C3NiT-Janzén and the Network for Low-defect-density III Nitrides for green power. The research will be undertaken in a large collaborative setting, involving researchers at LiU, Lund University and Chalmers University of Technology as well as industrial project partners. You as a candidate will therefore be involved in a large number of parallel projects, where you are required to contribute in addition to pursuing your own research.
Qualifications
Qualified to PhD studentships are only those who are or have been admitted to graduate studies.
We are looking for highly motivated applicant with MSc degree or equivalent in physics, materials chemistry or materials science/engineering. Fluent oral and written English language skills are required. Knowledge of semiconductor materials, structural characterization and TEM sample preparation will be advantageous.
Appointment time
The appointment will be until further notice for a maximum of one year at a time. A doctoral student may not be employed during a period exceeding eight years. The total time of appointment must not exceed the equivalent of four years ' full time research training.

By agreement.

The salary for PhD students is based on the department's salary scale.
