The University of Gothenburg tackles society's challenges with diverse knowledge. 56 000 students and 6 600 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract researchers and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future. Doctoral Candidate 8 "Stone age heritage as shared landscapes"

The Doctoral Network ArCHe (https://www.arche.uio.no/) trains 10 PhDs for increasing the scientific & public valu of Europe's archaeological coastal heritage, focusing on Stone Age hunter-fisher-gatherers (c. 12,000-2000 calBC). Embedded in a variety of European geographic settings differing in environmental development, this legacy faces massive environmental & human threats, & is diversely managed as cultural heritage. ArCHe addresses the challenges of this field with a past-present-future approach connecting the legacy from the past, its present status as archaeological heritage & prospects for future protection & integration into lived landscapes. With six beneficiaries & nine partners, ArCHe unites academic research centres & non-academic organizations (heritage sector, specialist organisations, media). Within this platform, customized PhD projects allow for cross-fertilization of knowledge among researchers & partners through scientific courses, workshops, conferences, applied secondments & transferable skills tuition. Training in archaeology, anthropology, critical heritage studies, heritage management, bioarchaeology, geology, oceanography, coastal engineering/preservation & communication relevant to coastal heritage & environment equip the ArCHe PhDs with advanced interdisciplinary & cross-regional knowledge & skills applicable to various academic & non-academic fields across Europe. The PhD projects contribute to the visibility, preservation & sustainable integration of vulnerable cultural heritage in coastal areas facing global environmental & development challenges.

Project description

DC8 contributes knowledge on how existing & future archaeological activities in shared landscapes can be made locally relevant & sustainable. DC8 examines three case study areas (Norway, W-France, Latvia) that host coastal Stone Age hunter-fisher-gatherer heritage, mapping different actors, interests, challenges & opportunities that may affect future management & use of these sites. Using classical anthropological methods & interdisciplinary approaches (e.g. focus groups, photo elicitation, participatory mapping, sensory walks, short surveys), DC8 provides an in-depth understanding of the socio-material dynamics shaping these shared landscapes, ranging from structural & economic conditions to social & cultural factors & environmental concerns. The comparative knowledge will identify how prehistoric hunter-fisher-gatherer traces can best be integrated into future planning & use of these landscapes, e.g. as places of learning in sustainable infrastructure development or tourism. DC8 will foster consciousness & reflexivity among site stakeholders, both within & beyond the network, to strengthen public dialogue & inclusiveness. DC8 provides training for a career in sustainable natural & cultural resource management. Expected results consist of a dissertation, two co-authored journal articles & popular science outputs.
