Join us on our journey #SiemensEnergy
Siemens Energy's 91,000 employees around the world are passionately pursuing one common goal: to energize society with affordable, reliable, and sustainable energy systems.
Join our great team and put your energy to use."
We are now looking for a student to take on the challenge
The challenge
• One field that we want to be investigated is to further increase our fuel flexibility capability to further expand the usage of green fuels. In order to simulate distribution of fluids such as air and fuel to capture complex interaction of competing processes we have developed in-house code which cover following field of energy balances, empirical equations and correlations.
1 a. Distribution of mass flows, total pressures, energy fluxes and mass flow of species
b. 1-D heat transfer at the components in the system
c. Chemical reaction progress inside the system
d. Treatment of 1-D acoustic wave propagation
2. Validate the model by assessment of mass flow, mass flow of species, total pressure and temperature distribution in the system against experimental test data
3. Assessment of the temperature of chemical equilibrium in the reacting flow (flame temperature) with respect to local air to fuel ratios, enthalpy of air and fuel composition
4. Use of the model to calculate temperature of the metal structure with regards to the cooling methodology as applied in the gas turbine combustor (convective / impingement / film cooling) and against temperatures measured in the existing hardware
The most challenging green fuel for dry low emission combustion is hydrogen and hydrogen enriched fuels due to its high reactivity moving the flame upstream causing risk of excessive heat load on the burner.
• The burners and the flames are a central part of a gas turbine and they are utterly important to minimize the combustion dynamics and emission levels, as well as maximizing the fuel flexibility and optimizing life time of the structure. Therefore, it is important to improve our combustion prediction of hydrogen enriched fuels and perform model calibration to measurement data.
• In the development process we use Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), acoustic simulations, water tests, atmospheric and high-pressure combustion tests, and gas turbine engine tests. The goal of this project is to model a variant of our product range and study the performance of numerical simulations of various gas compositions and evaluate the results to already performed combustion tests.
The proposed work is to be performed within 20 weeks and includes preparation of modelling, performing calculations in one of our in-house code and calibrate the simulated data, post processing and verification of the results as compared to measurement data.
Who are you?
The project fits you who are:
• A student of master's degree in physics, Computer science, Mechanical engineering, Energy system or similar.
• Interested in Gas turbines, combustion and numerical simulations
• Willing to learn and try out new methods based on physics
Previous experience with CFD and acoustic programs, programming skills and/or measurements are an advantage.

Why should you be working at Siemens?
Siemens Energy is one of the world's leading energy technology companies. The company works with its customers and partners on energy systems for the future, thus supporting the transition to a more sustainable world. With its portfolio of products, solutions and services, Siemens Energy covers almost the entire energy value chain - from power generation and transmission to storage. The portfolio includes conventional and renewable energy technology, such as gas and steam turbines, hybrid power plants operated with hydrogen, and power generators and transformers. More than 50 percent of the portfolio has already been decarbonized. A majority stake in the listed company Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy (SGRE) makes Siemens Energy a global market leader for renewable energies. An estimated one-sixth of the electricity generated worldwide is based on technologies from Siemens Energy. Siemens Energy employs 91,000 people worldwide in more than 90 countries and generated revenue of around EUR29 billion in fiscal year 2019. In Sweden Siemens Energy has 2600 employees in 10 locations.
At Siemens we value diversity by inclusion and by cooperating with people with different mindset, background, experience, competence and personal traits - in all organisational levels.
