Department of Soil and Environment
The Department of Land and Environment conducts research, environmental analysis and education on sustainable land use in both agriculture and forestry and urban environments. The activities follow national and international strategies such as food safety, national environmental and climate goals, Agenda 2030 and global goals. The majority of the department's operations and most of the employees are located in the land-water-environment building on the SLU Ultuna campus in Uppsala. In addition, there is a research group and a research station in Skara.

Tasks:
Climate change, greenhouse gas emission and crop management is interlinked and requires new knowledge for mitigation and adaptation action in Sweden and in temperate boreal zones of northern Europe

We are looking for a licentiate student for a research project that evaluates whether the greenhouse gas emission from cultivated peat soil with grass or fallow differs from the greenhouse gas emission from peat soil with annual crops. The research findings will contribute a research council assignment. How the greenhouse gas emission is affected by different cultivation systems, such as grassland or annual crops and how the emission is affected by drainage, water content and oxygen content in the soil.

The first part of the licentiate work consists of an extensive literature study using a systematic review methodology (meta-study). The second part will focus on measurements in the field and lab.

The licentiate will be part of a dynamic and internationally recognized research group that works with peat soils and water management. We are looking for a curious person who is keen to participate in a research program that aims to improve our fundamental understanding of how carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide emissions from peat soil are affected by cultivation intensity and cultivation systems as a basis for IPCC reporting and improved advice to agriculture.

The successful candidate will work independently with specific day-to-day task, and have regular supervision and mentoring with author and research team at the Department of Soil and Environment.

Qualifications:
Applicants must have a master's degree (or equivalent) in soil or environmental science, earth sciences, agronomy or similar subjects. We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with a strong interest in sustainability issues and how we can reduce greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture with experience from fieldwork. Experience in planning and performing experiments and scientific writing, as well as meta-analysis, is a merit. The applicant should be able to work both independently and in groups. You must master English in speech, reading and writing. As part of the work includes field trials, the licentiate needs to hold a B driving license.
The evaluation for the position will be based on written application documents, MSc (or equivalent) degree projects, scientific merit, relevant experience and other publications. A selection of suitable candidates will be invited for an interview and, if necessary, a written assignment may follow.
