At Legal, you are part of a global legal team with the task of providing legal advice andsupport to the business units and other staff functions of Volvo Car Group within all areas of business law. The department Intellectual Property (IP) is a global support function within Group Legal that provides IP support to all companies and business units within the Volvo Car Group. Currently we are 12 IP professionals, working in a digital environment, in an activity based workspace. The department consists of IP Counsels, Patent Attorneys, Trademark & Design Counsels, and IP administrators. The group is responsible for IP aspects connected to registered and unregistered intellectual property, such as patents, trademarks, design, copyright, trade secrets etc, to intellectual property agreements, such as assignment and license agreements, and to intellectual property in any other context such as R&D agreements, purchase agreements as well as other commercial agreements. We are also in charge of developing strategies for the Volvo Car Groups IP portfolio, and to ensure that such strategies are implemented, through establishment and maintenance of the IP portfolio. The department also handles all conflicts relating to IP within Volvo Car Group. Besides providing IP advice in specific matters we also offer training and is engaged in developing polices, instructions and guidelines which can be used throughout the Volvo Car organisation. IP's objectives are to develop strategies for and implementation of an IP portfolio that support Volvo Car Groups overall business objectives and to provide support and advice that adds value and protects the interest of the company and minimizes legal risks within the IP area.
As an IP Counsel you will be involved in legal research and give legal advice in all IP legal matters, including but not limited to document and contract drafting, negotiation with external parties, licensing, litigation and supervision of external legal advisors. The right candidate will be able to build a solid network including people from different parts of the organization, and outside of the organization, at outside counsel, cooperation partners etc. Since we are a rather small department, you will have the possibility to affect the way we work, and drive change. This position provides for unique possibilities to work within an increasingly important field within a company in the middle of a big transformation process.
Main responsibilities
• Handle most matters independently and assume the full responsibility in relation to management in relevant parts of the business organisation
• Provide internal IP training to the organisation and is engaged in development of legal tools and templates and communication material
• Provide IP support in license agreements, R&D agreements, purchase agreements as well as other commercial agreements with an IP context
• As software is of increasing importance to Volvo Car Group, this will be a focus area for this position
Required qualifications
• Master of law or equivalent ( with grades in the upper tier)
• Minimum 5 years of experience in IP law at a law firm and/or in-house
• Sufficient experience and knowledge of relevant legal areas to handle the main responsibilities
• Fluent in English
Meritorious:
• Proven understanding of business, business strategies and goals along with a basic financial understanding and awareness
• Proven interest in and ability to find areas of improvements and drive change within IP
• Proven analytical skills and experienced in making decision, developing solutions or judgments within IP area
• Specific knowledge in software related IP such as copyright, open source, as well as IP licensing
