We are looking for an analytically skilled engineer - who has at least 3 years of R&D experience within traffic safety or vehicle automation. The scope of the industrial PhD is "High integrity system for ensuring safety of automated driving features within Traffic Situation mgmt.". After PhD graduation it is foreseen that you will strengthen the Traffic situation management team with your expertise.
At the forefront of Research and Development in the automotive industry, Volvo Group Truck Technology (GTT) offers you the opportunity to become a part of the Traffic Situation Management team. The team is part of the Vehicle Automation department which has the responsibility to lead the development of Vehicle Automation and Active Safety systems for the full life-cycle enabling tomorrow's trucks. Vehicle Automation is part of Vehicle Engineering, responsible for developing vehicle components and systems for the different brands within the Volvo Group.
Position Description
As an industrial PhD (4.5-5.0 yrs), your main task will be to conduct research with Chalmers (approx. 3 years), take relevant PhD courses (1 year), and teaching (approx. 0.5-1 year). Proposed research questions:
Under which conditions can a low-complexity system, designed to have a high integrity with respect to critical failures, be responsible for the safety of a high-complexity system? What safety guarantees can we make for the complete system if the high-level control actions, u(t), belong to the safe control set, U?
What information, constraints and safe control set, U, needs to be transmitted from the low-complexity system for the high-complexity system to be able to fulfill its task efficiently (without getting interrupted)?
Can there be traceability of a particular action such that it can be determined on which basis that action was judged safe? And can the inverse analysis be facilitated such that it can be determined which safety critical components need to be further developed or invented in order to enable certain high-level tasks safely?
What does the models, f(x(t),u(t)), look like inside the low-complexity system and which safety aspects can be proven using these models?
The research work will also contain:
Conduct high level hazard analysis. Use this information to determine what requirements are deemed safety-critical
Define safety concepts through literature review and/or evidential reasoning, with respect to the ISO 26262, concepts Functional Safety Concept (FSC) and Technical Safety Concept (TSC). In addition, the safety of the intended function should be analysed
Define a safe state: What is required from the ego vehicle and surrounding environment in order for the vehicle to be considered safe?
Define mathematical models for ensuring safe tactical decisions from the high-level control system, such as Traffic Situation Management or equivalent
Define a strategy for how safety can be validated and verify independently from a driving system
Show viability of validation and verification strategy through initial execution
Develop software together with the Traffic Situation Management team
Validate & Verify developed solutions in simulations, software in the loop, vehicle tests, and other system setups
Integrate solutions into production hardware
