We are now looking for an in vitro Senior Scientist in immunotoxicology for a consultant assignment positioned at AstraZeneca in Mölndal. The assignment is to start November 2015 and last for one year.

The arena
Drug Safety and Metabolism (DSM) provides the preclinical safety and DMPK assessment of therapeutic modalities across the value chain. We work with project teams to improve target evaluation from a safety perspective, facilitate the design of new modalities with safe profiles, provide risk assessments to guide design of clinical studies and support regulatory interactions as projects progress through clinical development and to the market. Translational Safety is a department within DSM that delivers quantitative translational models for functional and pathological safety signals. The department is highly diverse with expertise in Safety Pharmacology, Safety Target Organs, Technology Development, Modelling and Informatics as well as Bioanalysis and Toxicokinetics.

The role holder will have a direct impact on the delivery of novel in vitro assay systems and in generating high-quality data in the area of immunotoxicology with a special focus on nucleotide modalities. Thereby supporting the AstraZeneca project portfolio in a cutting edge area of science. There will be an opportunity to learn novel techniques, and get a deeper understanding of safety risk assesment, but also an expectation to teach others in the area of own expertise.

Accountabilities and Responsibilities

• Develop and implement novel in vitro assays and technologies in the immunotoxicology area with a special focus on nucleotide modalities.
• Design and execute in vitro experiments to deliver high quality data to support projects and drive mechanistic problem solving.
• Ensure timely delivery of high quality experimental data for in-house studies as well as for potential collaborations to enable effective decision making.
• Identify opportunities to improve research methods and contribute to initiatives to implement these.
• Maintain up-to-date knowledge of technical advances of potential benefit to the business, in broad area of expertise.
• Share experience, knowledge and developments with peer scientists in AstraZeneca with the purpose of increasing general level of competence and train other staff as needed.
• Work closely with other scientists within and outside Translational Safety, including close interactions with the Immunotoxicology target organ expert for day to day activities.
• An opportunity to contribute to publications and presentations in a cutting edge area of science.
• Ensure own work, and the work of others, is performed in accordance with appropriate Safety, Health & Environment (SHE), quality and compliance standards, e.g. Good Laboratory Practice (GLP).

Minimum experience

• A Ph.D. in the area of natural sciences or M.S with comparable working experiences.
• Background in immunology (Ph.D. and/or working experiences).
• Theoretical and practical knowledge and experience of techniques and technologies relevant to in vitro systems, including cell culture and cell-based assay systems utilizing cell lines and primary cells.
• Experience in the development, implementation and application of in vitro/ ex vivo immunoassays.
• Experience in analysis of data and applying QC criteria.

Preferred experience/requirements

• Preferred experience with working with flow cytometry and other multiplex technologies such as luminex or MSD.
• Basic knowledge of the safety area and/ or specifically related to immunotoxicology is a plus.
• Previous experiences working in the Pharmaceutical Industry is a plus.
