The European Spallation Source in Lund, Sweden, is a partnership of 15 European countries, hosted by Sweden and Denmark. Our vision is to build and operate the world's most powerful neutron source and addressing some of the most important societal challenges of our time.

ESS now invites applications for the position of Head of Communications Division, working closely with the Director of Project Support & Administration, the ESS Management team and the Director-General.

This is a key appointment within the ESS' leadership and you will play a central and leading role together with the ESS management team to develop messages and strategic platforms to communicate the ESS vision and plans, to an internal as well as a global external audience.

Main responsibilities

• Develop, manage, and execute the ESS communications strategy, including external and internal communication on day-to-day activities and on-going projects, press and publicity, social media and community management
• Distil complex information into engaging content for presentations and messages to a variety of audiences
• Experience in working with and influencing a range of stakeholders, in different countries and with different cultural backgrounds and communication preferences
• Establish and proactively drive communications platforms for our executives to communicate in a clear and inclusive way. As a trusted advisor build understanding of our strategy, drive colleague awareness and support our transition to new ways of working
• Preparing content for distribution via our international channels. Being involved in determining how and when we communicate about culture and strategy and what the messages should be
• Supporting the delivery of strategic projects and initiatives by contributing excellent communications advice and - where appropriate - hands-on support
• Being a source of guidance for colleagues engaged in communications activities throughout the ESS, for example through working with the HR team on people-related communications
• Manage the ESS communications team to deliver to consistent high standards
• Guide and develop members of the communications team
• Meeting with stakeholders to determine scope of requests for support and what the team should deliver in response
• Seeking feedback on the team's output; and sharing with the team
• Working with team members to explore new channels and approaches
• Propose, plan and implement service improvements and cost saving opportunities
• Deep understanding of a range of communication channels
• Source and brief external agencies as required. Ensure contractual arrangements are in compliance with current business practice
• Act as a spokesperson for ESS when appropriate

Qualifications

• Our ideal candidate will have proven and demonstrable broad base communications experience, including media relations and issues management, preferably within a global context. Ideally you will have knowledge of academic research and the science sector as well as the political landscape. It is essential to come with a strong track record of delivery - working to budget and delivering on time. Significant experience in a management position in the fields of communication, preferably in a similar international scientific environment. Experience in an external communications role is essential.
• Master's degree in the field of Communication, Science Journalism, Strategic Marketing (or equivalent)
• At least 5 years of proven experience in people leadership and team management
• Strong relationship acumen: ability to build strong relationships at all levels both internally and externally
• Excellent communicator - well-spoken with excellent writing and presentation skills
• Fully fluent in both written and spoken English and preference will be given to candidates who also know a Scandinavian language
• Strong understanding of the challenges involved in managing senior stakeholders
• Experience of handling crises and other sensitive situations

Duration & Location
The position is permanent and your work place will be Lund, Sweden. The position is to be filled as soon as possible.
