About us:
Department of Forest Mycology and Plant Pathology, situated in Biocentrum Ultuna at SLU in Uppsala. Renowned for its dynamic research conducted both in the field and laboratory, the department focuses on the broader implications of climate change on agriculture and forestry. Specifically, the Forest Pathology research group dedicates its efforts to studying economically and ecologically significant fungal pests in Swedish forests, promoting close collaborations with industry and forest owners to promptly implement new research initiatives. The team delves into the consequences of devastating outbreaks caused by forest pest fungi, employing advanced molecular biology methods and bioinformatics to analyze the intricate interactions among fungi, trees, and the environment. The overarching goal is to comprehend the biology of these pests, predict their evolution, and pinpoint vulnerabilities for the effective control and mitigation of forest damage.
About the position:
We are seeking a qualified and experienced assistant for a fieldwork position in the south of Sweden, from June to July. The primary responsibilities include collecting samples of spruce needles and phenotyping trees for vitality and budflush. The role also involves operating a drone for collection of remote sensing data.
This sampling form part of the project Landscape breeding: A new paradigm in forest tree management. The main goal of the project is to develop a digitized forest tree breeding strategy that overcomes limitations found in traditional forest tree breeding. One important part is the resilience of the forest, so we want to identify, measure, and predict forest damage using remote sensing tools in combination with molecular and genetic analyses.
Qualifications:
We look forward to welcoming a dedicated and responsible individual to our team to help us gathering essential data for our ongoing projects. We expect you to have a Bachelor's degree in forest sciences or closely related areas. We also expect that you have a certification to fly drones and proven experience in operating DJI Mavic 3 or similar models of drones. You must have a valid driver's licence and experience in fieldwork and surveys, specifically in assessing tree spring phenology. The working language of the research team is English so we expect you to be fluent in both spoken and written English. In the recruitment process we will put a lot of emphasis on personal traits such as proven capacity to multi-task, collaborate effectively within a team and to make independent decisions and prioritizations when needed in the project.
