This is an exciting time to join our brand-new growing Experimental Medicine team in the Translational Science and Experimental Medicine department within the Early Cardiovascular, Renal and Metabolism therapeutic area at AstraZeneca in Gothenburg (Sweden), Cambridge (UK), or Gaithersburg (US). Depending on your profile, we are offering roles of Experimental Physician or Clinical Geneticist.

Early Cardiovascular, Renal and Metabolism (CVRM) is accountable for the discovery and development (up to phase II) of new medicines within three main strategic areas - cardiovascular/heart failure, metabolism (diabetes and NASH) and chronic kidney disease. The Translational Sciences and Experimental Medicine (TS&EM) Department within Early CVRM has the remit to bridge early and late drug development by providing: i) target validation in humans; ii) biomarker strategy (target engagement & proof of mechanism biomarkers); iii) precision medicine strategies; and iv) human data-driven novel target identification. Experimental Medicine team delivers studies in humans, including patient cohorts deep phenotyping, omics characterization, ex vivo experiments on human tissues/cells, to execute on the TS&EM remit.



Main Duties and Responsibilities

As an Experimental Physician or Clinical Geneticist, you will be a key member in the Experimental Medicine team. Your responsibilities will include design, planning, execution and interpretation of Experimental Medicine studies; drive innovation through identifying and adopting scientific and technical advances to test biological hypotheses in human studies; staying on top of the field and engaging in external collaboration opportunities to support Experimental Medicine remit. You will be expected to contribute your scientific expertise to the established drug programs as well as new drug target discovery, and serve as a go-to expert in your field of expertise in TS&EM. You will work closely with other Experimental Medicine team members (Experimental Scientist, Biostatistician) as well as collaborate with other TS&EM colleagues and other functions in and outside Early CVRM (Bioscience, Early Clinical Development, DMPK, Precision Medicine, Center for Genomics Research, Discovery Sciences).



Essential for the role

*

Medical or clinical science background with MD and/or PhD, PharmD or equivalent
*

Strong expertise in translational research and exploratory experimental medicine studies (for Experimental Physician role) or in human genetics research and/or clinical genetics counseling (for Clinical Geneticist role)
*

Profound biomedical knowledge of cardiovascular, renal or metabolic diseases
*

Experience designing, planning, and executing exploratory clinical studies, including genetic studies
*

Excellent collaboration and communication skills, ability to deliver as part of a cross-functional team
*

Maintaining a professional network, including ability to establish partnerships with key external experts
*

Peer-reviewed publications track record



Desirable for the role

*

Biotech/pharma industry experience, understanding of drug development, clinical trial experience, regulatory documentation preparation and submission
*

Expertise in the areas of precision medicine, biomarkers, omics, imaging, rare diseases
*

Experience of working with external vendors, CROs, collaborators, biobanks
