If you want to contribute and run projects that aim to reach the long-term sustainability goals and achieve a carbon dioxide-free society in Sweden and beyond, then the position as Energy System Modeler with us at IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute (IVL) may be right for you. We work closely with academia, industry, and authorities to make science a reality.

About the role
IVL's energy system modelling team develops, maintains, and applies optimization models designed to manage the short- and long-term operation and development of the energy system as a whole and its components, e.g., electricity, heat, transport and industrial sectors. We apply our models in various projects, ranging from long-term EU projects to shorter assignments commissioned by, for example, municipalities or companies.

Successful candidates will work in a dynamic, stimulating and demanding yet supportive environment. They will contribute to our energy modelling work by combining energy sector/market knowledge with advanced optimization tools - mainly TIMES models. They will be given responsibility to lead model development projects and provide supervision and guidance to junior colleagues.

The role includes leading the implementation of optimization techniques to capture complex real-world problems within our models and working closely with research colleagues to gain insights from model results. A successful candidate is also expected to contribute constructively to continuously improve the way the model team works and support the development of younger colleagues.

Your Background
To succeed in the role you have:

A technical or scientific university education. Postgraduate education is meritorious, but not a requirement.
At least 5 years of work experience as an engineer, consultant or researcher with practical experience in mathematical optimization (linear programming, dynamic programming, MILP...).
Proven experience in developing and applying optimization models with TIMES, MARKAL, GAMS or similar platforms.
Recognized skill in developing, leading, and implementing large projects in an industrial or academic environment.
Experience of selling assignments and writing applications and/or tenders in relevant development areas.
Documented good knowledge of Swedish and English in speech and writing.

We would also like to see that you have:

Good understanding of the energy system (both the physical system, policy and the electricity market), its various parts (electricity, heat, transport) and their interaction.
Experience in the application of sustainability evaluations (e.g., life cycle analysis) and techno-economic evaluations in projects.
Experience from taking a significant role in planning and implementation of EU projects.
Relevant doctoral degree.
Knowledge of software engineering best practices: version control (e.g., GitHub), data collection automation.
Matlab/Python programming skills.

Who are you?
As a senior energy system modeller, you are driven by meeting set goals and targets, delivering with good quality, and enjoy initiating and running things together with other competent and motivated employees. You have a genuine desire to contribute to a more sustainable future and you know how to do it. You enjoy finding new paths and trying new ground. Cooperation with colleagues, customers and grantees comes easily to you and you enjoy challenging and stimulating tasks that you can formulate yourself. We put great emphasis on your personal characteristics.

What we offer
We work in a creative and developing environment where everyone has a large individual responsibility and good opportunities for personal and professional development. As an employee at IVL, you become part of a workplace that values diversity, collaboration, innovation, and commitment. There is a wonderful community here with a sports club, art association, parties, pubs, and other activities. We sit in activity-based premises. At IVL, you get the opportunity to work on your sustainability commitment for real!
