STOCKHOLM UNIVERSITY invites applications for a four-year doctoral studentship in:
Asian monsoon variability and its impact on terrestrial ecosystems in Thailand during the past 25 000 years
Monsun variabilitet och dess påverkan på terrestra ekosystem i Thailand under de sista 25000 åren
at the Department of Geology and Geochemistry (ref. no. SU 464-13-0013-09)
Framework of the project
This project forms part of a collaborative network which addresses past changes in monsoon variability in Southeast Asia and involves researchers at universities in Sweden, Thailand, UK, US and Australia. The project will be focussed on deriving environmental and climatic signals from lake sediment and peat archives from northeast, northwest and south Thailand. The lake/peat archives will be analysed in high temporal resolution and with different paleoecological techniques over time intervals when rapid climate transitions are known to have occurred in the past. These data sets will then be compared to climate model output. The overall aim is to contribute to a better understanding of the sensitivity of tropical/subtropical terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems to abrupt climate change and to document baseline levels of variability inherent in these ecosystems to maximize their sustainable use and preservation.
Depending on the interest of the future PhD student, focus will be placed on geophysical, geochemical or biological techniques, or on climate modelling.
The PhD education will provide an excellent opportunity to gain expertise in a wide range of paleoenvironmental and numerical techniques by attending short course and summer schools and by visiting the different partners involved in the project.
The working language will be English, Swedish and Thai.
