Project description
• Gold concentrations in the oceanic crust and the regional distribution of gold deposits?
The ocean crust is the source material for many different types of ore deposits including those formed from hydrothermal alteration of the ocean crust and those formed in relation to subduction of the ocean crust. Subtle variations in gold concentrations in different types of ocean crust may control the distribution of gold deposits formed during later geological events. Yet there have been few systematic studies of the concentration of gold in ocean crust of different tectonic affinity (mid-ocean ridge, volcanic arc, back-arc, oceanic plateau), or of the mobility of gold during hydrothermal alteration of the ocean crust using modern, low-detection limit analytical methods. The project will have two parts; 1) geochemical analysis of present-day ocean crust from a variety of tectonic settings using previously collected international ocean drilling project samples. Analysis will include whole-rock and mineral analysis for gold and associated elements (As, Hg, Sb, Se, Te) and 2) field-based investigation of source area processes in volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits such as those in the TroodosOphiolite, Cyprus. The project will involve collaboration with colleagues from the National Oceanography Centre Southampton, UK. Analytical geochemistry, petrology and fieldwork will be used to carry out the project. Previous experience of geochemical analysis and ore forming processes is required.

Qualifications
Stockholm University Requirements: Applicants must have completed a research degree (e.g. Masters) or university study of 240 hp (4 years), with at least 60 hp (1 year) at the advanced (research) level.
Department Requirements:
At least 90 hp in Geology or Earth Science and at least 30 hp Math/Physics/Chemistry and/or Biology, depending on the research topic in Geology. At least 60 hp at the advanced level, including an independent project in Geology or Earth Sciences. For some PhD topics in Geology, students with degrees in appropriate Natural Science topics such as Physics, Chemistry, Math or Biology may be admitted.
Selection criteria:
The basis for selection is the applicant?s ability to succeed at research training. The evaluation of the candidates will be based on the applicant?s theoretical and experimental experience in Geology, written and verbal communication skills in Swedish or English, analytical and creative thinking, ability to take initiative action and work both independently and in collaboration with others. These attributes will be evaluated on the relevance of the applicant?s previous education, university grade records (especially advanced level courses), quality and breadth of the independent project, references, interviews and the letter of intent.
