hela Sverige Welcome to Linnaeus University! A place for knowledge, ideas and development. For growth potential and a belief in the future. In Småland and in the world.
Subject matter for the position: Forest industry production systems - Timber engineering/ Wood technology with specialization in strength behaviour of thermally modified wood.
Place of employment: Växjö, Sweden
Conditions of employment: 100 %
Linnaeus University, Department of Forestry and Wood Technology, is searching for applicants for a 4-year full-time PhD position. The responsibilities include research education up to a PhD degree in Timber engineering/ Wood technology. The Swedish Higher Education Act indicates that a person employed as a PhD student shall mainly devote themselves to their studies. The candidate may, however, work with education, research and administration in a limited capacity. Such compulsory work may not comprise more than 20% of the total working time and the total employment can then be extended up to 5 years.
Project description
Thermal treatment is an effective wood modification method to improve the dimensional stability and biological durability of wood. It takes place between 160 and 260°C leading to thermal degradation of wood polymers, mainly hemicelluloses. Many commercial methods for thermal modification exist depending on the different temperatures and pressure conditions applied, and with- or without oil. One of the most commonly applied thermal modification processes in Europe is ThermoWood that uses superheated steam at atmospheric pressure. After the treatment, the wood obtains an attractive brown colour. As thermally modified wood (TMW) does not contain any chemicals or reagents, it shows low toxicity and life cycle assessment has shown superior environmental performance compared to wood impregnated with conventional preservatives.
Currently, the use of TMW is still limited to non-structural applications, e.g. cladding and decking. TMW gives lower mechanical strength due to loss in mass by thermal degradation of the wood material, and is more sensitive towards crack initiation and propagation. However, previous results have shown that TMW has a potential for use in constructions, but it is essential to consider carefully the stresses that can occur on a construction and the practical consequences when it is used, and also to account for the typical strength characteristics and failure behaviour of the modified wood.
The project aims at exploring fundamentals related to the strength behaviour of TMW addressing the relevant questions needed to expand its uses.
