Institutionen för medicinsk epidemiologi och biostatistik (MEB) bedriver epidemiologisk forskning på världsfronten. Projekten syftar i regel till att öka kunskaperna om sjukdomar inom epidemiologiska området. Grunden för vår forskning innefattar information insamlad via enkäter, intervjuer, journaler, olika typer av register samt prover. Vår institution består av forskare, doktorander, statistiker, programmerare, IT-tekniker och teknisk-administrativ personal, totalt ca 250 personer.

The research group focuses mainly on epidemiology and etiology of cancers of the aerodigestive tract. Research activities consist of register-based research, large field works in different parts of the world, as well as a molecular biology laboratory dedicated on microbiome and cancer. Researchers have various academic backgrounds, and have broad collaborations within and outside Sweden.
Human aerodigestive tract is colonized by more than 1000 species of bacteria. The majority of these species, which form the human aerodigestive tract microbiota, might play a pivotal role in our health. Since majority of these bacteria are difficult to cultivate, our knowledge about their roles, both beneficial and deleterious, is limited so far. With the development of microbial metagenomics, we are at the verge of an exciting era when we will be able to explore and unveil the role of microbiota in the development of aerodigestive tract cancers. This project, in collaboration with SciLifeLab, which integrates traditional epidemiological field work of different study designs, molecular biology, bioinformatics and biostatistics, is a multidisciplinary cutting-edge project targeting on a hot topic, i.e. human microbiome and cancer risk. It will hopefully provide various and unique training opportunities for the student.
Duties and responsibilities:
Under supervision, the PhD student will be responsible for literature review, laboratory work, data analysis, result interpretation, scientific article writing and data presentation. The objectives are 1) To characterize oral and stomach microbiota in a Swedish general population, as well as to explore their associations with stomach precancerous lesions; 2) To explore the association between poor oral health and risk of stomach cancer; 3) To identify microbial candidate risk factors for esophageal adenocarcinoma through the comparison of distal esophageal microflora patterns in subjects with early esophageal adenocarcinoma or precancerous lesions, and patients with other conditions; 4) To explore microfloras in the nasopharynx and their association with nasopharyngeal carcinoma risk. Your supervisors have a broad expertise in cancer epidemiology, molecular biology, and bioinformatics.
Eligibility / Qualifications:
To be eligible, the applicant must a) hold a Master's (second-cycle) degree, b) have completed course requirements of at least 240 HECs, of which at least 60 at second-cycle level, or c) have otherwise acquired equivalent competence. The applicant should have a background in biomedicine at large. Past experience in bench work and/or bioinformatics is a plus. Fluency in written and spoken English is required.
