Job description
Responsible for RIA's bioinformatics activities to identify the drivers of disease phenotypes and biomarkers, target identification, patient segmentation and support of drug development projects. Responsible for establishing external collaborations with CROs, academia and biotech partners. This leadership role requires a strong scientific background, an excellent publication record in the field and excellent management and communication skills. The individual has outstanding team working skills to ensure scientific excellence and rapid progression of projects.
Major Responsibilities
Accountable for strategic planning and long term development of bioinformatics in close collaboration with the Chief Scientists, Heads of Departments and Team leaders
Develop, coach, mentor, retain, motivate and inspire bioinformaticians; create and maintain a work environment in which scientific challenge and innovation are maximized
Accountable to manage the team effectively, providing flexible, competent and responsive bioinformatics support in good quality and speed according to the portfolio needs; continuously enhance productivity and cost efficacy
Drive innovation and scientific excellence in bioinformatics through internal scientific development, external collaborations, publications and competitive awareness. Will also actively search, establish and manage external collaborations.
Propose and drive new targets into the portfolio
Work collaboratively with other Teams within and outside of the iMed
Make AZ scientifically visible by publishing scientific papers or presenting data at conferences
Strong focus on managing performance and setting demanding, achievable and measurable objectives and manage salary and bonus for the team.
Ensure that the work of the team is performed with right quality in accordance with compliance processes meeting Biology standards.
Education:
M.D. or Ph.D degree in a relevant scientific area
Requirements and Qualifications:
Significant expertise in bioinformatics analysis
Experience in drug discovery and/or early clinical development
Excellent scientific publication record
Good communication and networking skills
An understanding of Respiratory Diseases
Experience in the identification and progression of drug targets through to the clinical setting
Leadership and behaviours
Fulfill leadership and behaviour criteria for roles on lower GCLs
Excellent communicator who take responsibility for decisions made. Role model engagement and commitment.
Able to lead culture shift and raise the bar in performance at all levels in the organization
Able and accountable for driving business performance. Don't accept status quo, but push the boundaries in performance.

Understand the wider business and can see the internal and external AZ picture
Appreciate that scientific expertise needs to be balanced with business leadership
Able to actively seek collaboration in a complex matrix structure
