Goal
Define off-line or on-line diagnostic methods to measure the degradation of subcomponents due to either normal usage or electrical/ thermal and mechanical stresses.

Background
Power converters are typically exposed to high switching frequency operation which can lead to different voltage/current transients which speed up the power switches or DC-link capacitor degradation which affects the durability of the whole system.

Plan
Analysis of the degradation mechanisms occurring in the IGBT power switches, DC-link capacitors, and filter capacitors during power cycling and modeling the degradation using output voltage/current measurements. The student will have opportunity to use FiXstress and FMECA for simulation.

Suitable background
Education within, or similar to, the following engineering programs are suitable: Electrical power engineering, power electronic engineering, electronic engineering. Experience with MATLAB/Simulink/ PSCAD Software.
