The Programme Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for a Beam Extraction Engineer.
Description of directorate/division
The Design Office contributes to the overall design of ESS. Main areas are design engineering, CAD-coordination and design. The work is performed in remote-design collaboration with our partners around Europe.
Description of main responsibilities
The ESS project is in the final preparatory phase for design before construction. The target and neutron beam extraction are critical in ensuring a sufficiently large number of high quality beam ports are available for scientific experiments.
We are seeking a beam extraction engineer to participate in the design effort of the Target Station monolith and the neutron beam line extraction from the target to the instruments.
The successful candidate should have a background in mechanical and/or nuclear engineering and will deal with the design and integration of the monolith in the Target Station. The areas of responsibility are design engineering of what is inside or in contact with the monolith. The monolith areas is one of the largest cross functional areas which is why the post requires close, two-way collaboration with many parts of the ESS organisation and its collaborators.
The position will involve dealing with extreme high-precision mechanics in a high radiation area, an an environment with poor accessibility, where everything in the surrounding areas is solid and heavy. ESS is therefore looking for an experienced and dedicated specialist in charge.
Qualifications

• Master of Science or equivalent in mechanical engineering and/or nuclear engineering.
• A minimum of 5 years experience in the implementation of engineering activities as functional descriptions, requirement definitions, design (conceptual, pre-detailed and detailed studies), and definitions of complex interface systems.
• Substantial experience in designing high precison components in heavy and complex areas, preferably in nuclear field, support systems, radiation analysis, assembly and remote handling tools.
• A minimum of 5 years experience in design engineering involving an advanced 3D CAD system.
• Experience of working in an international environment is essential.
• Excellent oral and written English skills are a prerequisite; knowledge of other European languages would be an advantage. What ESS can offer
• Opportunity to work in an international environment.
• A unique opportunity to be involved from an early stage in the development of a world-leading centre for materials research.
• Possibility for personal development.
• Relocation assistance, including family support and Swedish language course, is offered. Duration & Location
The position is permanent. Your work place will be situated in Lund, Sweden.

Start date
The position is to be filled as soon as possible but by 1st August 2012 at the latest.
