About the role:
The ESS is at an exciting turning point. It is in transition from being a construction site, to being an operating facility. To help us realise our goal of being the most powerful neutron source in the world, we are now looking for an Automation & Control System Engineer to join the Automation Section, located within our Integrated Control Systems (ICS) Division.
The scope of the Automation Section is to design, develop, deliver and maintain control systems based on industrial automation technology such as Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) and to integrate them with the EPICS (Experimental Physics and Industrial Control System) software infrastructure. The Automation Section develops and maintains also the control system operator interfaces (OPIs), as well as the archive and alarm configurations of the PLC-based control systems.
As an Automation and Control System Engineer at ESS your responsibilities will be the following:
• Lead the development, integration, verification, and validation of control systems, ensuring compliance with relevant procedures and standards.
• Define schedule and costs while exploring innovative approaches and conceptualizing solutions.
• Document design/development
• Review other engineering designs
• Stay current with emerging start-of-the-art technologies.
• Collaborate with system owners to facilitate successful deployment of integrated control systems.
• Provide technical support to team members on PLC technologies and EPICS integration.
• Develop and maintain key control projects, including the new PLC/EPICS Integrator tool.
About you:
As a person, you are proactive, self-motivated, responsible, structured and eager to grow in a fast-paced, impact-driven environment. You enjoy working both independently and together with others within a team. You are comfortable communicating with both technical teams and external stakeholders.
We believe that you meet the following qualifications:
• Master's degree in Automation Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
• Proven experience in control system design and implementation within a research facility or industrial setting.
• Possess strong expertise in PLC programming, according to standard IEC 61131-3, Siemens tools such as Openness and Test Suite Advanced, EPICS software tools. including SNL and Sequencer module.
• Possess excellent knowledge of Python, C/C++. Knowledge of pytest and PySide6 modules is an advantage
• Familiarity with accelerator systems technology is advantageous.
• Strong skills in technical writing, reporting, and documentation.
• Strong ability in independent problem-solving and solution development.
• Proficient in communication across diverse teams to support effective collaboration.
• Excellent oral and written English skills
Duration & Location
This is a full-time, permanent position based at the ESS Campus in Lund, Sweden.
