An opportunity is now available for a highly experienced and remarkably motivated Associate Principal Scientist to join the Cellular Biology Team within the Discovery Sciences Innovative Medicine (IMED) Biotech Unit in Gothenburg, Sweden. Leading from the bench, you will apply proven skills in cellular biology and genome engineering to drug discovery projects, while also demonstrating a clear independent ability to drive and implement strategic initiatives within the drug discovery pipeline. Your passion for investigating scientific questions, combined with strong team working ethics will enable you to contribute significantly to our team whose remit is to support IMED projects globally with delivery of impactful cellular models used for disease target identification and validation, through screening, hit identification and lead optimisation, as well as clinical candidate evaluation.
As part of a team within the Discovery Sciences organisation, you will be working within a vibrant scientific environment to support drug discovery. We push scientific advances in small molecules, oligonucleotides as well as other emerging technologies, always with a view to providing medicines to improve patient care. The Discovery Biology Department of Discovery Sciences is responsible for the generation of novel reagents and assays to support projects in the drug discovery pipeline from target discovery all the way to clinical candidate. While we work globally, we engage most often with two main therapeutic areas that cover cardiovascular, renal and metabolic diseases (CVRM), as well as respiratory, inflammation and auto-immunity (RIA).
Main Duties & Responsibilities
This is a lab-based role with a significant component focused on developing and driving strategic scientific initiatives. Bench-work is centred on generating bespoke cellular reagents to support projects in all phases of the discovery process, including application of leading genome engineering techniques, design of experimental strategies, delivery of cellular models to projects, as well as troubleshooting. In addition, you will be required to identify new areas relevant to the use of cellular models in the early phases of drug discovery, assess their feasibility and drive their development with the goal of positively impacting projects.
Essential Experience

* Considerable expertise in cell culture of a variety of mammalian cell types
* Substantial expertise in all aspects of cellular genome engineering using a variety of techniques (with absolute requirement on the inclusion of the CRISPR/Cas system), from design through evolution of the tools to generate fit-for-purpose cellular models, as well as demonstrable experience in downstream enrichment (FACS) and validation methods (sequencing, PCR and RT-PCR)
* Experience in generating advanced cellular models of disease with particular emphasis on co-culture, 3D culture, and microphysiological systems
* Documented independent capability in driving and implementing strategic initiatives, especially outside immediate area of expertise
* Excellent communication skills and an ability to operate effectively in a multi-disciplinary research environment
* Independent analysis and evaluation of complex data and delivery of data to agreed timelines
* Proven ability in providing technical and scientific leadership and guidance to others
* Documented awareness of using relevant scientific and technical advances to identify opportunities and drive capability development
Desirable Experience
* Experience in cell culture of primary cells and iPSCs is highly desirable
* Experience with microfluidics is highly desirable
* Thorough understanding of drug discovery and how to translate scientific expertise into new project and business opportunities
* Scientific visibility and leadership through project contributions, internal presentations and external publications
* Excellent problem-solving skills, not limited to own area of expertise
* Clear and firm decision-making skills, coupled with tenacity to see decisions through, even in situations of ambiguity
* Track-record in publishing scientific manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals, and presenting at external conferences
