Department
At the Department of Public Health Sciences we conduct research, teaching and applied work based on public health science and epidemiology.

The research is aimed at analysing health determinants on the population level, and developing and evaluating preventative structural and individualised measures, including legislation and guidelines. The field also includes health economics, health systems research and implementation research. Our activities have a strongly international flavour, and the Department's researchers are scientific advisers to authorities and other decision-makers on the regional, national and international level. The Department is divided into research groups operating within the fields of global health, public health epidemiology and social medicine with a total of 150 employees. In addition, we have around 70 research students.

Duties
The assistant professor will be part of the research group health system and policy. You should actively contribute to a lively and growing research field of maternal and newborn health with a health systems and policy perspective. We expect you to manage collaborative research projects with a high degree of independence together with our key partner universities of Uganda and Tanzania and other partners in Sub-Saharan Africa and Asian countries. You should actively seek own grants, contribute to grants prepared by other members of the group, and contribute to the further development of research foci in the field of non-communicable diseases.

Teaching, course organization, and supervision of projects and thesis within our Department's Master programs will be a part of the work.

The position is for 2 years with possibility of extension.

Entry requirements
A person is eligible to be appointed Assistant professor if he or she has been awarded a Degree of Doctor or has achieved the corresponding scientific competence. The persons appointed should primarily be the ones who have been granted a Degree of Doctor or have reached the corresponding competence no more than seven years before the end of the application period.

You should have a PhD in epidemiology or Global/Public Health and relevant experience of maternal and newborn health. You need to have shown independence in research by having published at least three publications without the PhD supervisor. Furthermore, you should have finalized a 2-year period as a Postdoctoral researcher. You also need to qualify for all other key qualification requirements of teaching and research as laid down in the regulations for an associate professorship/docentur ( http://ki.se/en/about/academic-appointments-and-docentur ).
The main working language is English, but some understanding of Swedish is required.

Having work experience in implementation and/or research in low-resource settings is a must for this position as well as being able to show research leadership competence by having managed own grants as a principal investigator.

A medical background with relevant clinical experience in obstetrics or pediatrics is a strong asset and is considered an advantage. Also having established strong own collaborations with international organization, other research institutes and partners in Africa or Asia will be considered an advantage.

Bases of assessment
We stress scientific expertise when assessing applicants.

An application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish: Curriculum vitae, qualifications and description of planned research, presented in accordance with Karolinska Institutet's qualifications portfolio ( http://ki.se/qualificationsportfolio).
