History of Landscape Architecture; restoration and conservation of historical parks
Landscape Architecture Unit at the Department of Urban and Rural Development announces a fully funded position as PhD student in history of landscape architecture and conservation/restoration of historical parks and gardens. Contemporary landscape architecture truly has an interdisciplinary nature. This field works with a broad variety of landscapes on different scales: from regional to the city and park design, from urban to rural and to national parks and reserves. Today landscape architecture is recognized as an ?umbrella? discipline which combines knowledge in urban planning, architecture, art and heritage history, engineering, urban ecology, green structure design, biodiversity and even human behavior and health. Research of cultural landscapes and the best landscape architecture precedents is seen as one of the main fundamentals in landscape architecture. Analysis of historical landscapes can give us understanding of national integrity and sense of place. Landscape Architecture Unit in Ultuna carries out various researches within landscape architecture and adjunct subjects. Our doctoral projects are naturally connected or complimented to the Landscape Architecture research activity. This doctoral position will involve research on history of landscape architecture with analysis of principles of design compositions, philosophical foundations of gardens and parks in different historical periods and its interpretation in the era of globalization. It should also study different theoretical concepts and approaches on garden?s restoration and reconstruction with special focus on Swedish conditions. This position involves field and archival work and requires a personal experience of documenting and formulating measures for maintaining historic parks and gardens in Sweden. Academic qualification in history, intellectual history or history of art would be a merit. Selection of the candidate among qualified applicants is based on a written application (including motivation and explanation of an interest in this position and CV), an authenticated list of qualifications, personal references from two university staff members or previous co-workers, good knowledge of English (especially in writing) and an interview.
Qualifications
To be qualified for a PhD degree involves four years of full-time studies. Applicants should have a master level in landscape architecture.
