Together with other engineers around the world, you and your team will create innovative human-centric car technology that makes life less complicated and more enjoyable for people. Are you interested in design and connected car technology? Do you share our passion for people, the environment and our urge to create a superior driving experience? Climate system department is responsible for all climate development within Volvo Car Group. The department is part of Body & Trim unit within Volvo Car's R&D division. The HVAC & Air Distribution group has today 16 men and women divided into three main teams, HVAC, Air Distribution and Air Quality systems. We are of different ages, backgrounds and experiences with open discussions and good fellowship among the teams.
The position as Air Quality PhD will be a part of the Air Quality system team. The project goal is to improve the vehicle cabin air quality, mainly by reducing the pollution of the incoming air. These improvements of the cabin air quality should be balanced with the energy use of the climate system. The main work consists of literature study of the current research field, improvement of existing complete vehicle air quality measurement procedures, collection of measurement data, development of a simulation model, evaluation of new technologies and air quality systems with both simulations, component and complete vehicle measurements. Furthermore, writing several research papers on the different results and attending air quality related conferences are also included in the project. Volvo Cars is responsible for the project and the work is done in collaboration with the division of Building Services Engineering, Chalmers University of Technology. Furthermore, several companies will be involved in developing and suppling prototypes of different air quality solutions.
The Main Object of the PhD-project is to understand how to achieve good vehicle cabin air quality and decrease the energy use of the climate system at the same time. Pollutants of interest could be small particles, ozone, NO2, SO2 etc. The project will increase the knowledge of the R&D department at Volvo Cars of how climate systems that maintains good air quality with a low energy use should be designed. This will influence future products, i.e. better air quality in the cabin with less energy use.
