Senior Lecturer in Political Science with a Focus on International Politics
Universitetslektor i statsvetenskap med inriktning mot internationell politik
University West invites applications for a senior lectureship in political science with a focus on international politics. Applicants are expected to have a teaching and research background in international politics. We welcome applications from candidates who also have some experience teaching comparative politics, particularly the politics of areas outside of Europe and North America.
You will chiefly be assigned to the International Program for Politics and Economics (IPPE), an interdisciplinary program consisting of a political science major and a minor in economics, all taught entirely in English. Applicants must thus be able to teach effectively in English. The political science major combines courses from the major subfields (political theory, international politics, comparative politics and public administration) but highlights the internationalization of politics in all courses. Applicants need therefore demonstrate experience and skills in developing high-quality undergraduate courses with a focus on teaching international politics and preferably also on the internationalization of politics. Teaching excellence and enthusiasm for teaching a student body characterized by multiculturalism and international exchange is a must.
The scientific staff within IPPE is research-active, conducting research with funding from Vetenskapsrådet, FORMAS and other major funders. We expect applicants for the senior lectureship to want to join our group with an active research agenda on international politics or the internationalization of politics. Further, candidates must either have a track record of securing external research funding or must demonstrate the potential to secure funding. Related to this, we expect that candidates have either published internationally in peer-review settings or have current projects that are expected to lead to such output.
University West offers substantial support to scholars as part of our commitment to high-quality research. In addition to a guaranteed portion of research time, members of the scientific staff have the opportunity to apply for internal research funds each year. These funds can be used to increase the amount of research time and to allow for writing grant applications or article and book manuscripts to be submitted to peer-review outlets.
Basic Qualifications
Ph.D. or equivalent and documented teaching experience is required by date of hire.
Assessment criteria
Scientific and teaching expertise will be equally considered.
The criteria for assessing scientific expertise are: scientific relevance for the field of international politics; productivity, with a focus on Swedish or international peer-review publications; and scientific originality, breadth and depth of the research. Having acquired external research grants is also a merit.
The criteria for assessing teaching expertise are: ability to teach effectively in English; teaching experience (years of experience, level, breadth and type of education); teaching evaluations by others (e.g. student course evaluations), pedagogical leadership (directorship of undergraduate studies, course responsibilities, examinator, etc); and pedagogical training.
Collaborative skills, the ability to work effectively with others in a small team environment and ability to teach in Swedish are beneficial.
