The School of Global Studies (SGS) at the University of Gothenburg invites applications for a post-doctoral research fellowship for a period of 1-2 years. The candidate will form part of a research project led by Professor Fredrik Söderbaum on "External Funding of Regional Organizations in Africa: What Works and Why?"
The School of Global Studies at the University of Gothenburg
The School of Global Studies at the University of Gothenburg produces top- quality research, teaching and public engagement on today's key global challenges. The staff of over 100 faculty and PhD researchers examines global questions and their governance in disciplines and areas such as peace and security, international relations, development studies, anthropology, regional studies, cultural heritage, environmental sustainability, gender, human rights and migration. These issues are explored both generally and as manifested in different regions and countries. The School's work is highly international, cross-disciplinary and policy-relevant.
Project description
The post-doctoral position is part of the research project "External Funding of Regional Organizations in Africa: What Works and Why?", which is led by Professor Fredrik Söderbaum and funded by the Swedish Research Council (SRC) for three years. It can be summarized as follows:
Many donors have invested enormous financial resources in strengthening the institutional and organizational capacities of intergovernmental regional organizations in Africa, such as the AU, ECOWAS, EAC, IGAD, and SADC. A fundamental problem is that there is little systematic evidence in research and policy about "what works" and "why" in the external support of regional organizations in Africa. In answering this general question the research project focuses in particular on two interacting research questions:
1. To what extent and under what conditions does external support increase or reduce the implementation gap in African regional organizations (i.e. the discrepancy between agreed policies and their implementation)?
2. What are the development results of external funding of regional organizations in Africa?
The project adopts a comparative case study design, focusing on a selection of multilateral donors and bilateral donors in three distinct policy fields: regional economic integration, infrastructure, and transboundary water management. The final selection of regional organizations and donors for the comparative case studies will be determined after the first-step mapping/quantitative analysis. As a whole, the project combines qualitative and quantitative methods and sources of information in creative ways, including fieldwork at a range of sites in Africa.
Subject area
Peace and development research
Specific subject description
Regionalism and regional organizations in Africa
Job assignments
The post-doctoral fellow will conduct research within the research project External Funding of Regional Organizations in Africa: What Works and Why?. The post-doc will have primary responsibility for quantitative analysis and the mapping of the main donors in each policy field, while also being deeply involved in field research and the more qualitatively oriented comparative case studies. Some funds are available for fieldwork and conferences, but the candidate should also seek to develop research proposals that can attract external funding.
Eligibility
Post-doctoral positions are appointed primarily for purposes of research. Applicants are expected to hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent degree from another country at the point in time of the application deadline. Preference will be given to candidates who have been awarded the degree no more than three years before the application deadline and who have not held a post-doc position within the same or similar subject area at the University of Gothenburg for more than one year. An older degree may be acceptable under special circumstances (such as sick leave, parental leave, clinical attachment, elected positions in trade unions, or the like).
Assessment
Candidates should preferably have experience in areas related to comparative regionalism, regional organizations (preferably in Africa) and/or development cooperation. Candidates must also have demonstrated skills in both quantitative and qualitative research methods.
Candidates are expected to publish in leading academic journals, and publication potential in relevant fields will be a key selection criterion. Therefore, the candidate must also have demonstrated excellent skills in academic written English. Precise focus of the work to be undertaken in the postdoctoral position will be negotiated. Additional merits include capacity to work in a transnational and cross-disciplinary team of researchers and to communicate research findings to wider audiences beyond academia.
