Information about the department
The Department of Life Sciences was started on 1 January 2015. The department conducts research, education and utilisation in biotechnology with the aim of promoting lifelong health and contributing to a sustainable bio-based society. The department has in a short time established a research culture defined by extensive publishing, citation rates and external grants, as well as successful utilisation, for example through start-ups.

The department consists of four divisions where outstanding research in industrial biotechnology, systems and synthetic biology, chemical biology, and food and nutrition science is conducted as well as a division of infrastructures.

Nearly 200 people from 30 countries are active within the department. The work environment is characterised by creativity, job satisfaction, collaboration and responsibility.

The Department of Life Sciences has summarised its mission:
• To be an attractive environment for frontline researchers in biotechnology linked to health and sustainability
• To deliver excellent research results and innovative solutions for a sustainable society
• To offer excellent training that develops creative engineers and researchers
• To be a major contributing factor to Chalmers' good reputation internationally

Project description
The DDLS program is now establishing a national "data science node" in "Cell and Molecular Biology" at Chalmers University of Technology with a national responsibility to develop national data services and to provide bioinformatics support. The bioinformatics support staff will be integrated with the SciLifeLab bioinformatics platform (NBIS), a unique national infrastructure with over 100 employees, providing support, infrastructure and training to the Swedish life science research community and participating in international collaborations. We are now looking for outstanding candidates with competence in computational biology, to provide advanced bioinformatics support for scientifically excellent data-driven Swedish research projects in Cell and Molecular Biology. The successful candidate will join and contribute to a vibrant and welcoming community of bioinformatics and data science researchers within NBIS, SciLifeLab and Chalmers, with national and international collaborations.

The SciLifeLab and Wallenberg National Program for Data-Driven Life Science (DDLS) is a 12-year initiative that focuses on datadriven research, within fields essential for improving people's lives, detecting and treating diseases, protecting biodiversity and creating sustainability. The program will train and recruit the next generation of data-driven life scientists and create strong and globally competitive computational and data science capabilities in Swedish life science. The program aims to strengthen national collaborations between universities, bridge the research communities of life and data sciences, and create partnerships with industry, healthcare and other national and international actors.

As a national hub for molecular biosciences in Sweden, SciLifeLab develops and maintains unique research infrastructure, services and data resources for life science. The overall aim of SciLifeLab is to facilitate cutting-edge, multi-disciplinary life science research and promote its translation to the benefit of society. About 200 research groups, 1500 researchers and 40 national infrastructure units are associated with SciLifeLab, with two main centers located in Stockholm and Uppsala, but with national SciLifeLab units at all major Swedish universities.

Major responsibilities
• Carry out advanced data analyses within nationally prioritized data-driven cell and molecular biology projects
• Develop tools and workflows for such analyses
• Educate other scientists in bioinformatics through collaboration within supported projects, teaching at advanced national courses and consultations
• Engage in the continuous development and improvement of the DDLS program and the SciLifeLab Bioinformatics platform at a national level.

Qualification requirements
We are looking for two(2) highly motivated scientists with a strong background and interest in computational aspects of cell and molecular biology. The successful candidate should have (i) a PhD (or equivalent experience and competence) in bioinformatics, data science, computer science or other relevant area, (ii) extensive experience of quantitative analysis of cell function by peering into their molecular components in time and space; from single molecules to organs and organisms, (iii) fluent oral and written communication skills in English, and (iv) strong skills in cooperation and communication.

Merits
Postdoctoral studies are a strong merit but not a requirement. Practical knowledge of developing and applying data-driven methods relying on machine learning/artificial intelligence or statistical modeling techniques in order to analyse and integrate multi-modal data is a strong merit. Great importance will be given to personal suitability.

Contract terms
