Stark forskning och attraktiva utbildningar lockar forskare och studenter från hela världen. Med ny kunskap och nya perspektiv bidrar Göteborgs universitet till en bättre framtid.

At the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences (BioEnv) we have teaching and research activities that stretch from the alpine ecosystem, through forests, cultivated land and streams, all the way into the marine environment. In these environments we study different levels of biological organisation from genes, individuals and populations, to communities and ecosystems. We work within ecology, evolution, physiology, systematics and combinations of these fields in order to understand the impact of natural and anthropogenic changes of the environment.

The department is placed at three different localities: in Gothenburg Botanical garden, at Medicinarberget in Gothenburg and Kristineberg Marine Research Station. The current positions are placed at the Gothenburg Botanical garden.

Project description
We at EDGE lab (https://edge-ecology.com/) seek research assistants for two projects focused on arctic plant ecology.

The first project is about root ecology in the tundra. The objective is to relate properties of the root systems of plant communities to environmental conditions (temperature, water, nutrients) and ecosystem functions (carbon storage and fluxes, microbial activity).

The second project is about coexistence and pollination in the arctic. The objective is to learn more about how plants in the arctic reproduce, if they are self-pollinating or dependent on pollinators, and in this case if they are pollen-limited.

Job assignments
The first assistant will be processing soil samples. The job will involve development and application of methods for separating roots from soil, and measurement of root mass and root functional traits in the lab.

The second assistant will help process seed samples from past field work season from a tundra environment in Jämtland, Sweden. The assistant help with processing seeds from a pollination experiment to find out if there is pollen limitation in various plant species.

Eligibility
Eligible to be employed as an assistant researcher is a person with a university degree on a basic or advanced level in biology.

Assessments
For the first post, we are seeking a motivated person with experience in processing root samples. Good skills in data entry are necessary. Experience in other types of soil ecology is advantageous.

For the second assistant position, we are seeking a person with data entry experience. Skills assessing seed vitality are advantageous.

The application should be written in English or Swedish and must include:

• A short cover letter with the applicant's justification for the application, i.e., that describes how the applicant meets the selection criteria
• A list of qualifications (CV)
• Copy of certificate of exam

The top ranked candidates will be selected for an interview, which might be held in English and could also be performed by phone/Zoom.

Employment
Both positions are fixed-term employments for 2 months, 100%, alternatively 4 months, 50 %, starting on agreement. The location is the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences.
