Two Project Assistants
in the Strategic Environmental Archaeology Database (SEAD) project
The Environmental Archaeology Lab (MAL)
The Environmental Archaeology Lab, at the Department of Historical, Philosophical and Religious Studies, conducts international research, teaching and consultancy in the fields of environmental archaeology and Quaternary science. The lab, located in the Humanities building, has five full time employees and is an integrated part of the archaeology unit in the larger department which has over 100 employees.
SEAD
An international database for environmental archaeology data is under development at the Environmental Archaeology Lab, in collaboration with HUMlab, at Umeå University, Sweden. The web accessible system will allow the storage, extraction, analysis and visualisation of data on past climates, environments and human impacts, and forms part of an international network of research infrastructure for environmental archaeology and Quaternary palaeoecology. The bulk of the data will consist of quantified records of plant macrofossils, fossil insects and soil chemical/ physical properties recorded from archaeological and Quaternary geological excavations. Our mission is to provide online tools to aid international researchers in accessing and analysing these data, and to provide access to data that are currently not accessible online.
The job
We are looking for two project assistants to take care of a large amount of data entry. Each of the two posts will be primarily orientated towards either geochemical or archaeobotanical data respectively. Tasks will mainly involve data management, including the collation, summary, evaluation, conversion, translation (Swedish to English) and entry of existing analogue and digital data into the SEAD database. To a lesser extent, you will also be assisting other staff in testing research software which will developed as part of the project. The work will require you to be able to work independently but also as part of a small team situated in the SEAD project room in the humanities building.
