Two Professorships in Architecture
at the School of Architecture
Umeå School of Architecture opens as a new laboratory of experimental architecture in Umeå 2009. Future architects will be educated through artistic research and different methods of integrated design. Sustainability and international perspectives are essential parts of the new School of Architecture in Umeå.
Umeå School of Architecture distinguishes itself through the integration of artistic, scientific and professional methods and means of study in an international profile. The intermingling of art encourages development, sustainability and technology. The education aims to point clearly towards sustainable architecture and integrated design.
The Architectural programme is based on interplay between artistic development and scientific research. The architectural design process has its basis in aesthetic development, whereas subjects such as architectural history and theory and technology have their basis in scientific research. The education is largely based on project assignments and aims to integrate theoretical and scientific knowledge with artistic process and research.
The School of Architecture offers two areas of specialization in Master’s programme: the Laboratory for Sustainable Architectural Production and the Laboratory for Immediate Architectural Intervention. These fields will reflect the future development of our research programmes in several ways.
In conjuncture with the opening of the Architecture programme, Umeå School of Architecture will launch a research department. By means of strategic enterprises, research in the fields of architecture and architectural theory will be established. To reinforce the connections between research and education, the faculty staff at the School of Architecture will be involved in research programmes.
