Department of Ecology
The Department of Ecology conduct research for sustainable agriculture, forest production and biological conservation. Our basic research on populations, communities and ecosystems forms the foundation for understanding influences of land use and climate on animals, plants and soil nutrient status and greenhouse gas balance. Active dissemination, outreach and frequent contacts with stakeholders are key activities.

We are searching for two motivated postdoctoral researchers interested in optimizing flower strips to achieve more sustainable crop protection in agriculture. Specifically, the project will address how individual plant species affect natural enemies, pollinators and pests aboveground and nematodes belowground. Based on these results, optimized flower mixtures will be designed and tested. The successful candidates will enter a strong international research environment at the Department of Ecology.

Duties:
Both postdoctoral researchers are expected to perform experiments where individual plant species are examined for their effect on natural enemies, pollinators and pests aboveground and nematodes belowground. Based on the results, optimized flower mixtures for increased ecosystem service delivery to achieve more sustainable crop protection in agriculture will be designed. One postdoctoral researcher will test these optimized flower strips in commercial strawberry production, both in conventional and organic fields. The other will evalute already existing field edges planted with flowers (so called multifunctional buffer zones) and suggest improvements of these flower mixtures. The research will be conducted in collaboration with stakeholders. The postdoctoral researchers will actively design experiments, coordinate empirical work including supervising field assistants, analyze data, and write and publish scientific papers in collaboration with the research team. They will also assist in the supervision of students, engage in lab activities and communicate with stakeholders.

Qualifications:
We are looking for two highly motivated candidates pursuing an academic career in ecology with an interest in above- and belowground interactions, biological control, crop protection and pollination. The required qualification for the positions is a PhD in ecology, biology, entomology or an exam considered equivalent by the employer. Documented experience in performing ecological field work is required. Skills in insect and/or soil ecology are meriting, as well as experience in conservation biological control. The candidate is expected to be capable and willing to take initiative and work independently as well as in a team. The candidate should have documented skills in statistical analyses and scientific writing. Excellent communication skills in English, both written and oral, are required. Field work will take place in multiple locations; a driver's license is therefore required. Preference will be given to candidates who have been awarded the degree no more than three years before the application deadline.

Place of work:
The positions are placed at the Soil Ecology unit at the Department of Ecology in Uppsala, but it is a collaborative project with the Agricultural Entomology unit at the Department of Ecology and the Department of Plant Protection Biology in Alnarp. In addition, field work will take place in other locations throughout Sweden.

Form of employment:
Time limited position as postdoctoral researcher for two years.

Extent:
100%

Starting date:
According to agreement but preferably spring 2020.

Application:
We welcome your application no later than 2020-02-10, use the button below.

Desirable if the application is written in English and it should contain (i) a statement of academic interests and motivation for applying to this position (max 8000 characters including spaces), (ii) Curriculum Vitae including a complete publication list separated into peer reviewed and non-peer reviewed publications and (iii) contact information to two reference persons. We might ask you to send your PhD thesis at a later stage.
