Two postdoctoral positions in Baltic Sea Research one at University of Helsinki and one at Stockholm University.
These universities have entered into a strategic partnership where one of the key areas is Baltic Sea research. To strengthen this joint research initiative we are now inviting applications for two postdoctoral positions, one at the Askö Laboratory/Baltic Sea Centre (Stockholm University) and one at Tvärminne Zoological Station (University of Helsinki).
We are looking for two scientists to be part of a growing team of researchers exploring the role of the coastal zone in the functioning of the Baltic Sea ecosystem. The coastal zone is highly productive, rich in biodiversity and habitat complexity, and provides valuable ecosystem services. At the same time, however, it is highly sensitive to human pressures and it is also in the coastal zone where human pressures are most readily observed. Nevertheless, how biogeochemical processes and the mechanisms maintaining biodiversity in the coastal zone are interlinked is a timely and evolving research filed.
We are looking for candidates with experience and a strong interest in at least one of the following areas, with a particular focus on the coastal zone:
• biodiversity and ecosystem functioning
• benthic and/or pelagic biogeochemical cycles
• modelling of ecosystem processes in the coastal zone.
The ideal applicants would have PhD's in Marine Ecology, Ecosystems ecology, Biogeochemistry, Ecosystem modelling or related disciplines, have strong publication records commensurate with experience, and a demonstrated potential to obtain external research funds. The successful candidates will be expected to be active in research and publication, advise graduate students, and engage in inter-disciplinary research and public outreach. Comparative studies at both Askö Laboratory and Tvärminne Zoological Station are expected.
An additional position with exactly the same profile is announced at University of Helsinki. The postdocs are expected to develop independent lines of research, but are also expected to work closely together, thereby being instrumental in further developing the partnership on Baltic Sea research between the two universities. The specific research plans for the postdocs will be developed in collaboration with researchers at both universities.
University of Helsinki: The position is based at Tvärminne Zoological Station which offers excellent laboratory and field support for environmental research. This marine station serves as a centre for a large variety of high quality biological research, carries out environmental monitoring, and offers facilities for visiting scientists, field courses, symposia and seminars. Established in 1902 and thus provides good background data for studying long-term environmental change. Annually, the station is used by 250-300 scientists, conducting studies in ecology, evolutionary biology, physical oceanography and marine chemistry. www.helsinki.fi/tvarminne
Stockholm University: The position is based at the Askö Laboratory/Baltic Sea Centre. The Askö Laboratory belongs to Stockholm University Baltic Sea Centre and is situated 80 km south of Stockholm in the archipelago of Trosa. The field station is a national resource and marine research and fieldwork is conducted all year round. Facilities are available for field, laboratory studies and experiments, including boats, termoconstancy rooms and more. http://www.su.se/ostersjocentrum
