The Institute of Environmental Medicine (IMM) is a department at Karolinska Institutet and an interdisciplinary research institution within the broad field of environmental medicine. IMM conducts cutting edge research within the areas of environmental and occupational medicine, toxicology, physiology, epidemiology, and biostatistics with the aim to clarify how environmental and lifestyle factors affect our health and which role genes have. IMM also serves as a scientific advisor to public authorities within the area of environmental medicine and IMM scientists participate in national and international expert groups.

The Unit

Engineered nanomaterials hold great promise in a range of biomedical applications, including medical imaging and for targeted delivery of therapeutic compounds.

However, the biocompatibility of nano(bio)materials has to be carefully evaluated. The Unit of Molecular Toxicology at the Institute of Environmental Medicine is engaged in nanosafety research with a strong emphasis on the in vitro assessment of hazardous effects of nano(bio)materials including metal/metal oxide and carbon-based materials on the innate immune system, focusing on relevant endpoints such as cytokine-chemokine responses; the role of the bio-corona of adsorbed biomolecules is also under investigation. The work is conducted in the frame of the Flagship Project GRAPHENE (focus on graphene and other 2D materials), the national MISTRA project, and the H2020 project BIORIMA. We are seeking to recruit two post doc researchers for these projects. The positions are full-time and temporary for one year.

Duties

The successful applicants will work at the Unit of Molecular Toxicology at the Institute of Environmental Medicine, Karolinska Institutet, in a highly international environment. Both post docs will focus on cellular interactions of engineered nano(bio)materials, using primary immune cells and transformed cell lines as model systems. They will also participate in other joint activities such as consortium meetings in MISTRA, BIORIMA, and GRAPHENE, and provide assistance to the PI in the preparation of periodic reports to the project coordinators in each respective project.

Entry requirements

We are looking for highly motivated candidates with a PhD degree in cell- or molecular biology, immunology, toxicology or equivalent field of research and a strong and well-documented interest in nanotoxicology/nanosafety research. Experience with the following techniques is needed: isolation and maintenance of primary cell cultures and cell lines, confocal and light microscopy, flow cytometry, and other standard cell- and molecular biology techniques. The successful candidates must also have a basic command of nanomaterial physico-chemical characterization, eg. DLS. Excellent communication skills (in English) and an ability to interact scientifically with other post docs and students in the laboratory, and with other members of the consortium, are essential. Previous post doc experience and a strong publication record are preferred. Previous experience of large collaborative research projects is considered an advantage.

Application process

The application must contain the following documents in English:

- Curriculum vitae, including date of the PhD defense, previous academic position(s), current position, and list of laboratory skills, and a description of any previous participation in EU funded research project(s) (max. 5 pages).
- List of publications, including original articles, review articles, and book chapters (do not send any reprints).
- Statement of current/future research interests (max. 1 page).
- At least two signed letters of recommendation from current or former supervisors (send scanned copies of letters).
The application is to be submitted through the MyNetwork recruitment system.

Karolinska Institutet is one of the world 's leading medical universities. Its mission is to contribute to the improvement of human health through research and education. Karolinska Institutet accounts for over 40 per cent of the medical academic research conducted in Sweden and offers the country 's broadest range of education in medicine and health sciences. Since 1901 the Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet has selected the Nobel laureates in Physiology or Medicine.

Pursuant to the regulations of the Swedish National Archives, applications are kept on file for two years after the appointment has gained legal force. The regulations do not apply to attachments that have been printed or otherwise published.

Karolinska Institutet strives to provide a workplace that has approximately the same number of women and men, is free of discrimination and offers equal opportunity to everyone.
