On 1st January 2010, Linnaeus University opened its doors for the first time as Sweden's newest university, the result of a merger between Kalmar University and Växjö University.Linnaeus University is a modern, international university in southern Sweden. The university is situated in Kalmar and Växjö with 34,000 students and 2,000 employees. For more information see: Lnu.se

The Department of Biology and Environmental Science is part of the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences. The research activities within this multidisciplinary school include the areas of Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Biomedical Sciences, Organic Chemistry, Marine Ecology and Microbiology.

The marine microbiology research group seeks two Post Doctoral researchers for studies of the photoheterotrophy of marine bacteria. The positions are for 1 year, with possibility for a one-year extension, and located in Kalmar.

Project title: Proteorhodopsin photoheterotrophy in marine bacteria

The research project: Marine bacteria play a central role in driving global biogeochemical cycles of elements essential to life (e.g. carbon, nitrogen and phosphorous), but detailed knowledge of how bacteria carry out specific steps in element cycling is lacking. The main goal of this project is to investigate the molecular mechanisms employed by marine bacteria carrying out proteorhodopsin mediated photoheterotrophy. Work will include field studies on the spatial and temporal distribution of proteorhodopsin light energy harvesting and laboratory experiments with natural marine bacterial assemblages as well as cultured model species. Analyses include functional genomics of bacterioplankton using bioinformatics analysis of genome-sequenced marine bacteria and metagenomic/-transcriptomic datasets from natural bacterial assemblages coupled with rate measurements of a variety of bacterial activities and metabolisms.

Applicants for position 1 should have a doctoral degree in microbiology, molecular biology or biochemistry or similar. Applicants should have documented expertise in analysis of large bioinformatics data sets to infer the physiology, metabolism and ecology of marine microorganisms. Experience with culturing marine bacteria for assessing their physiology and/or potential biogeochemical role is well appreciated. The starting point for the position is April 15th 2013.

Applicants for position 2 should have a doctoral degree in microbiology, molecular biology, virology or biochemistry or similar. Applicants should have documented expertise in performing microbe-microbe interaction experiments with marine bacteria and quantifying uptake of organic carbon compounds by marine bacteria using radioactive tracers. Experience with processing samples for next-generation sequencing techniques is well appreciated. The starting point for the position is April 15th 2013.

Application has to be registered no later than April 7th 2013. Mark your application with reference number PA 2013/133-2.2.1 and which position you are applying for.

The application (in English) should contain a CV, documentations of exams and grades, the name of two references (with telephone number and e-mail), a description of motivation and experience relevant to the research project and any other documentation that the applicant would like to present.
To be able to apply for the position on lnu.se/job and vacancies, indicate that you agree to the terms. The credentials you invoke must be verified with certification and they must be attached to digital in the e-recruitment tool.
