Mid Sweden University welcomes applications for the posts of
Two PhD Students in Bio-materials Engineering
at the Department of Natural Sciences, Engineering, and Mathematics
Ref. no. MIUN 2011/823
Subject area: The proposed positions concern the developments of processing principles and structural design criteria for new ?forest-based? bio materials. As the green transformation of the society progresses, there has been an increasing demand in the public for replacing fossil-fuel-based materials (?plastics?) with bio-renewable and bio-degradable alternatives. Our forest and our forest product industries have enormous potential of deriving and developing a new generation of green materials to meet this public demand. The proposed projects are part of a larger research initiative, ?FORE?, recently started at Mid Sweden University. This program aims at developing and demonstrating a new bio-refinery system based on the mechanical pulp operations that are present in the region.
The first subject area is the process development for creating a new class of fibres and fibril materials from mechanical pulping streams in paper manufacturing. The project involves the mechanistic and engineering investigations of the process vs. fibre/fibril quality relationships, the investigation of process efficiency, the development of processing principles, and finally process design and implementation.
The second subject area concerns materials/product design for utilising such fibre/fibril materials for flexible food packaging, industrial filters, and consumer/healthcare applications. A specific objective of the materials/product design is to develop novel multi-scale structures in relation to mass-transport and strength properties by using computational modelling and advanced microscopy techniques. Both subject areas will closely interact and work together in terms of fibre/fibril design and processing.
Qualifications: The candidates must hold a university degree equivalent to a Bachelor?s degree with a major in physics, chemistry, or engineering (mechanical-, chemical-, materials-, or bio- engineering). A Master?s degree in science or engineering and a prior industrial experience are an asset. We are seeking for individuals who are strong both in theoretical and practical skills.
Place of work: The post is based in Sundsvall, Sweden.
Start date: Immediate.
Information Further information is available, for the first subject area, from Professor Per Engstrand, per.engstrand@miun.se , +46(0)60 14 8649 or mobile, +46 (0)70 573 6752, and, for the second subject area, from Professor Tetsu Uesaka, tetsu.uesaka@miun.se , +46 (0)60 14 8916 or mobile, +46 (0)70 268 5658. (Please try e-mail, first, for contact appointments.)
Application: Please append the following to your application: (1) one-page statement describing your motivation for applying this position, your strength and weakness, and your career interests, (2) transcripts from your prior degree programs, and (3) CV. Four identical copies are to be sent to: Registrar, Mid Sweden University, 851 70 Sundsvall. State ref.no. MIUN 2011/823. Applications must be received by Mid Sweden University no later than the 23rd of May, 2011.
