Two PhD Student positions
in the subject of Medical Science with an orientation towards Global Health

at the Department of Public Health and Clinical Medicine

Description of the PhD project
Most of today's health determinants know no geographical borders. The link between global thinking and local action is increasingly obvious. Most serious threats to health are trans-national and efforts for control and intervention lead us into the global arena. Researchers and politicians in public health now share a new agenda emphasising the importance of health for economic development, as a means of fighting poverty and also therefore achieving global security. New imperatives for public health arising from globalisation fall into two strands: one primarily outside health care relating to e g governance in health policy as well as gender issues, intervention models and work patterns, the other focusing on health system functionality, epidemiological and health transitions.

Institutional setting
The Division of Epidemiology and Public Health Sciences (a unit within Department of Public Health and Clinical Medicine) will host the PhD positions. The unit has recently been appointed Centre of Excellence for Global Health Research by the Swedish Council for Working Life and Social Research (FAS) with longterm funding supplemented by Umeå University. The Swedish Research Council (VR) also recently funded a new Swedish Graduate School in Global Health, hosted jointly by this Unit in Umeå and the Karolinska Institute, Stockholm. The successful applicants for these studentships in Global Health will work within this overall research and teaching environment.

Our current research and teaching environment, comprising approximately 80 people including administrative staff and doctoral students has evolved over the last 20 years. Characteristics are multidisciplinarity, a North-South perspective, the combination of medical and social perspectives and a synergy between quantitative and qualitative methods.

Qualifications
Applicants are expected to be interested in global health issues and be willing to work as part of interdisciplinary and cross-cultural teams within the Centre for Global Health Research. This is likely to involve collaboration and field activities in low- and middle-income countries. The posts will be based in Umeå, Sweden, but may involve substantial international travel.
