Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world's top 100 universities. The University has 40 000 students and 7 600 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

MAX IV is a Swedish national large-scale research laboratory hosted by Lund University. It provides scientists from Sweden as well as internationally, with state-of-the-art instrumentation for research in areas such as engineering, physics, structural biology, chemistry and nanotechnology. Fully developed it will receive more than 2 000 scientists annually, conducting ground-breaking experiments in materials and life sciences using the brilliant X-ray light. As a national laboratory, MAX IV is operated in agreement with governmental regulations, and in compliance with major funders such as the Swedish Research Council (VR) and the Wallenberg Foundation. 250 people are currently employed at MAX IV Laboratory, and 16 beamlines are funded. The facility is in a ramp-up phase with 3 beamlines now receiving users and 13 more scheduled to be commissioned and built to receive users within the next few years. The facility is dimensioned for 25-28 beamlines.

APXPS at MAX IV

The MAX IV Laboratory hosts two beamlines for ambient pressure x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (APXPS): the HIPPIE beamline on the facility's 3 GeV ring and the SPECIES beamline on the 1.

5 GeV ring. The staff at the two beamlines are part of the Spectroscopy group of the laboratory and form a common team for APXPS. We are now looking for two beamline scientists to join the APXPS team.

Job description

One of the beamline scientists will work primarily at the HIPPIE beamline, while the other will primarily work at the SPECIES beamline. The beamline scientists and other APXPS staff are expected to collaborate and to assist each other. You will also work together with staff within other parts of the organisation.

The beamline scientists are expected to take responsibility for the following tasks:

- Support of external users before, during and after their APXPS beamtimes at MAX IV
- Maintenance of the SPECIES/HIPPIE beamlines
- Development of their own scientific project, often in collaboration with external users
- Commissioning and development tasks at the beamline(s)
- Administrative work in conjunction with user support

The beamline scientist with primary placement at SPECIES will also work with

- Development of the SPECIES beamline in accordance with the MAX IV strategic plan and the expectations of the Swedish APXPS user community
- Taking part in the development of a strong user community at the APXPS beamlines of MAX IV
- Acting as the contact point for existing external collaborations (development of ALD cell with University of Helsinki, development of time resolved experiments with Oslo University and University of Oulu, and development of an electrochemical cell with Uppsala University)
- Administrative tasks related to the operation and maintenance of the beamline (budget responsibility etc.)

In this position you will work together with staff at other beamlines, and there will be possibilities to develop your research project by applying for beamtime at other beamlines than HIPPIE and SPECIES.

Qualifications

In order to apply for this position you must have the following qualifications:

Beamline scientist with primary placement at SPECIES:

- A PhD in a relevant scientific area
- Documented extensive experience with and knowledge of APXPS
- Documented extensive experience of working at or using beamlines at synchrotron radiation facilities
- Documented extensive experience of working with ultrahigh vacuum equipment
- Documented experience of maintenance of ultrahigh vacuum equipment
- Good command of spoken and written English

Beamline scientist with primary placement at HIPPIE:

- A PhD in a relevant scientific area
- Documented experience with and knowledge of APXPS
- Documented experience of working at or using beamlines at synchrotron radiation facilities
- Documented experience of working with ultrahigh vacuum equipment
- Documented experience of maintenance of ultrahigh vacuum equipment
- Good command of spoken and written English.

Any of the following qualifications are considered an advantage:

- Experience of support of external users at a user facility
- Experience of designing and setting up instruments for APXPS and/or ultrahigh vacuum experiments
- Experience of commissioning a beamline at a synchrotron radiation facility
- Experience of surface science experiments
- Programming experience in any programming language in general and in Tango in particular
- Experience of liquid jet experiments (HIPPIE)
- Experience of polarisation-modulated infrared reflection-absorption spectroscopy (HIPPIE)
- Experience of instrumentation for time resolved experiments and time-resolved experiments in general (SPECIES)
- Good command of Swedish

You should have good communication skills and be used to and appreciate working in teams.

Please indicate in your written application which placement you are most interested in (HIPPIE or SPECIES).
