UMSC is targeted to strengthen cross-disciplinary modelling in scientific research and is at present a joint effort between the Departments of Ecology and Environmental Science, Physics, and Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics at the faculty of Science and Technology at Umeå University.

Three Assistant Professor (forskarassistent) positions
as part of the build up of UMSC (Umeå Science Modelling Centre)

Assistant Professor in Statistical Physics
One position (ref no 312-5110-07).
The position will be formally tied to the Physics Department. For this position we are seeking a person with a background in statistical physics/condensed matter theory and computer based modelling. He or she should have an outstanding research record and a special interest in complex systems, networks and information aspects of living system from an evolutionary point of view, as well as a strong interdisciplinary interest in general.

Assistant Professor in Theoretical Ecology
One position (ref no 312-5111-07).
The position will be formally tied to the Department of Ecology and Environmental Science. For this position we are looking for a person with an outstanding research record and with a strong interest in quantitative modelling of ecological and evolutionary dynamics. Relevant background for an applicant is in theoretical ecology or computer based modelling from applied mathematics or physics, and with genuine interest for ecological dynamics. As part of UMSC, he or she should also have a strong interest in interdisciplinary research.

Assistant Professor in Applied Mathematics
One position (ref no 312-5112-07).
The position will be formally tied to the Department of Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics. For this position we are seeking a person with an outstanding research record and a background in applied mathematics, especially computational mathematics, and experience of mathematical modelling of ecology and evolution, or a person with a background in another area of mathematics but with good knowledge of computer programming and a strong and documented desire to work in applied mathematics and conduct interdisciplinary research in (or related to) mathematical modelling of ecology and evolution.

To qualify for these positions you should have a PhD degree or equivalent preferably obtained no more than five years ago. The Assistant Professor (forskarassistent) positions are initially for two years normally with a prolongation of another two years. The Faculty of Science and Technology encourages assistant professors to participate in undergraduate teaching up to 20% of their working time. Such teaching participation qualifies for an extension of the position up to a total of five years.
