Electromobility is a growing organization in place to shape the future in a way to have low emissions and fights against climate change! The Electromobility department develops and drives the electrified products for Trucks & Buses as well as creates opportunities for all business areas within the Volvo Group. It is growing fast, and Energy Storage System (ESS) becomes a key component within the electrified powertrain. Thermal management of the EES plays an important role when it comes to the efficiency of the systems.
Now it is a question for you. Are you willing to work on this topic and gain new experiences by challenging yourself in this new development? If so, you will perform research and work on the thermal management of the battery cell and investigate temperature variation which occurs during the cycling test.
Scope/ Task
This project will focus on the following topics:
• Literature survey on thermal management and batteries.
• Finite element methods in COMSOL Multiphysics will be used to simulate heat dissipation from the battery cell.
• Designing and fabrication of the thermal setup to cool down the prismatic battery cell from the side and the bottom of the cell during the cycling test.
• Investigate the effect of thickness of the thermal interface material on the heat transport from the cell to the heat sink.
• Study the effect of applied pressure between cell and heat sink to explore heat transport from cell to the heat sink.
Suitable background
Engineering master thesis student, with a keen interest in energy storage and thermal management.
Thesis Level: Master (30 ECTS)
Language: English
Starting date: January 2023
Number of students: 1-2
Tutor
Marco Samani, Ph.D., Verification Engineer,
