To enable the fossil freedom that drives society forward - this is our purpose. We are looking for talented students who want to help us on our journey towards fossil freedom. By writing a thesis at Vattenfall, you will have a unique opportunity to contribute to our purpose.
Job Description
You will write your thesis at Svensk Kärnbränslehantering AB, SKB. Our mission is to deal with all the radioactive waste from the nuclear power plants in Sweden. In doing so we must meet the most stringent requirements regarding the safety of human beings and the environment.
In the unit Research and post-closure safety, we are responsible for the analysis of radiological safety for the time after closure of the final repositories.
The aim of the MSc thesis is to develop a simple model using differential equations to provide a time-resolved estimate of how various radioactive substances in the reactor water deposit on accessible surfaces within the reactor, diffuse into the system oxide, and redissolve in the reactor water. This model will contribute to the safety analysis calculations, helping to better estimate the radionuclide inventory of the deposited nuclear waste (e.g. the filter agents of the reactor water).
The outcomes of the thesis are expected to be shared with the European project EURAD-2. EURAD-2 is a European research program dedicated to improving the long-term safety of radioactive waste disposal. As part of this, the ICARUS work package explores how different physical and chemical processes interact over time, integrating experimental studies, modeling, and data analysis to improve safety assessments.
This assignment is for 1 student.

SKB's mission is to safely manage the radioactive waste from Swedish nuclear power plants. Through our work, we contribute to fossil-free electricity production and a sustainable society.
We have just started the extension of the Final repository for short-lived radioactive waste, SFR, and are making preparatory work above ground before starting the construction of the Final repository for spent nuclear fuel in Forsmark. In a few years we will also build an Encapsulation plant adjacent to the Central interim storage for spent nuclear fuel, Clab, in Oskarshamn.
SKB's headquarters are located in Arenastaden, Solna. We also have offices in Oskarshamn and Östhammar, where we operate facilities and prepare for construction projects.
