Master Thesis: Benefits from new transport protocols in cellular networks

This is an opportunity to develop your expertise in simulation and network protocols and finalize your Master thesis with Ericsson. If you are interested to explore the subject below further, please apply for this thesis project.

Overview

For many years TCP has been the dominant transport protocol in the Internet and the format has proven flexible enough to support a number of implementations which differ in, e.g., congestion control and header extensions. Recently, however, there has been several proposals to look into the possibilities of building new transport protocols on top of UDP. The reasons for this change range from the wider diversity of content being transported to the changing characteristics of access networks. In particular we have seen a tremendous growth in video traffic, which is particularly hungry for bandwidth, and over cellular accesses, which in many ways are different from fixed accesses.

This development means that there is both an opportunity and a need to reconsider the usage of TCP. The topic of the proposed thesis is therefore to study the possible benefits from new transport protocols in cellular networks. Such protocols can contain features that TCP cannot support and take advantage of the particular environment of cellular networks such that end user performance is optimised.

The work will therefore include using and further enhancing a simulator of cellular internet access (preferably in ns-3), running experiments with different usage scenarios and different protocol features, evaluating the results and proposing optimal solutions for new transport protocols.

Requirements and qualifications:

Student of Computer Science or related subject
Strong interest in simulation, networking and transport protocols
Knowledge of simulation languages
Proven track record in NS3 and ability to provide reports around an assignment involving NS3 or similar
Availability to start thesis work after summer 2015
