Department of Urban and Rural Development
Research and education at the Department of Urban and Rural Development are carried out at four different divisions: Agrarian History, Rural Development, Landscape Architecture and Environmental Communication. The appointment will be at the Division of Rural Development. The Division of Rural Development consists of two subject areas: Rural Development in the Global South and Rural Development in Sweden and Europe. An international master's program in Rural Development and Natural Resource Management and a 5 year professional program in agronomy focusing on rural development are offered by the Division.

Subject
The subject covers rural development in Sweden and Europe with a focus on the socio-political aspects that lead to sustainable development in the context of changing rural places. Interdisciplinary approaches to changes taking place in environmental and agricultural governance and politics across local, national and global levels are important. Analysis of how gender, class, ethnicity and other dimensions of power influence rural change is central.

Duties
The Associate Senior Lecturer shall develop his/her own research profile within the subject. This should include theoretical approaches and extensive fieldwork with attention to interdisciplinary perspectives.

In addition, the associate senior lecturer will be expected to

• apply for research grants and publish scientific articles
• take part in research education as co-supervisor
• teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels
• take courses in teaching in higher education
• collaborate and communicate with researchers within the department and with others at SLU
• collaborate and communicate with relevant societal actors.

The holder of the position is expected to fulfill the criteria for promotion to Senior Lecturer during the time-frame of this position.

Qualifications
The candidate needs to have a Ph.D or equivalent academic qualifications within the subject area. Priority will be given to candidates who have received a PhD or equivalent qualifications no longer than five years before the application deadline. The candidate should be scientifically proficient in the subject. Good ability to express him/herself in written and spoken English is essential.

Assessment criteria
In appraising the candidates, proficiency in the following will be considered:

• documented experience of high quality scientific research and international publishing in relation to the subject

• capacity to initiate and carry out research both theoretically and empirically.

In addition, collaborative skills, and experience of multi- or interdisciplinary research and teaching is meritorious.

The assessment includes evaluating the applicant's capacity to be able to develop an independent research profile within the subject and to qualify for promotion to senior lecturer during the time-frame of this position.

Form of employment
The employment is limited to four years in accordance with the Higher Education Act. A position as associate senior lecturer is a qualifying employment that constitutes the first step in an academic career at SLU. An associate senior lecturer has the right during his or her employment to apply for promotion to senior lecturer on the basis of criteria established when the position as associate senior lecturer was announced.
