What's in it for you?
We are looking for a Technical Expert within Safety Impact Assessment with a genuine interest in traffic and vehicle safety to join our Safety Centre at Volvo Cars Headquarters in Gothenburg, Sweden.

At Volvo Cars Safety Centre, 190 highly skilled professionals strive every day to make the world a safer place for car drivers and everyone else on the road. We are proud of our track record including numerous world's firsts, all based on real world research and knowledge: exemplified by the safety belt (1959), SIPS (1991), WHIPS (1998), City Safety (2008), Pedestrian Detection with Full Auto brake (2010), and Run off Road protection (2015).

What you'll do
At Volvo, we take great pride in our safety technologies being grounded in real-world problems experienced by real-world customers. As Technical Expert within the area of Safety Impact Assessment, your job will be to provide both thought leadership and practical guidance on how to best continue this tradition of customer-data based safety problem identifications and safety impact calculations. You will lead our development characterization of real-world data needs for prospective and retrospective safety impact analyses of all types of safety systems as well as drive our development of efficient analysis methods.

The general role of a Technical Expert at Volvo Cars is to deliver scientific and strategic input within your area of expertise, as well as addressing key issues and providing insights into customer needs and perform benchmarks relevant to the area. In addition, you are also expected to increase the organizational competence through coaching and teaching within the area of specialty.

The role is quite broad in the sense that it covers the whole safety context, spanning from crash avoidance and injury prevention to safety augmentation for Autonomous Drive. It also requires teamwork to succeed. You therefore need to have a collaborative mindset and believe that teamwork is a stronger driver of results than solo acts. Also, need to have the pedagogical skill and engagement required to present and explain insights to an audience who might not know your area very well, and doing this in such a way that they easily can apply your learnings in their own areas of expertise of product development.

You are research focused and motivated, but can still keep a customer focus, in the sense that research at Volvo Cars in the end is intended to create safer and better products and therefore has to support product development in the way it is performed. You will help define and drive Volvo's strategic knowledge building in the field, utilizing state of the art competence centra within academia or institutes, as well as benchmark the area. You will also contribute to external exposure of Volvo's safety leadership (e.g., through expert groups, scientific articles, and public outreach).

You and your skills
First and foremost, you share our genuine interest in traffic safety! We also believe that you have a Master's or PhD level degree within a relevant area, as well as knowledge and experience of safety system developments in an automotive safety context. To lead our safety impact analysis, you need to be highly skilled in statistical analysis, both from a theoretical point of view as well as from a more practical, real-world, point of view, where data is incomplete and quality issues must be handled daily. You have basic competence in biomechanics and/or behavioral science (applicable for vehicle safety) as well as experience from leading and developing individuals and teams.

Your level of communication skills and presentation techniques are high, and you have a generally positive attitude and high motivation. You are well organized, but do not mind living with a fair bit of uncertainty in a research landscape where parts of the map are not yet filled in. You are also a reliable team player who enjoys collaboration.
