Technical Expert Biomechanics

The future challenges and opportunities are exciting and through advanced technology and research we are developing safety with regard to injury prevention and collision avoidance, in addition to areas like Autonomous Drive, HMI, emotional safety and driver behavior - all based on real world situations.

The group Safety Strategy & Requirements are responsible for developing strategies, requirements and methods for future Volvo Cars based on real world customer data. The mission is directly driving the Volvo Cars' Safety Vision 2020 and beyond. Different international real world data sources are used for this mission including Volvo Cars' own Traffic Accident and Naturalistic Driving databases.

As Technical Expert in Biomechanics you will be placed at the Volvo Cars Safety Centre, and will act within whole Volvo Car Group when needed. The role will lead Volvo Cars' development of methods and tools for car safety development within the area of biomechanics of impact trauma, applied in protection of the people inside and outside the car. The role delivers scientific and strategic input, addresses and resolves key technical issues as well as includes global surveillance, including customer needs and benchmark, within the area of expertise.

Main responsibilities

* Develop biomechanical injury criteria used for technology development that are based on the best possible knowledge and with levels relevant to Volvo Cars strategy and leading position in safety
* Develop and connect criteria to measurement tools that can be used for analysis and verification
* Conduct injury pattern and mechanism analyses based on real world crashes, crash tests and computer simulations
* Contribute to the long-term strategy as a basis for research and safety development by providing the strategy process with relevant data
* Initiate, lead and carry out biomechanical research both through internal and external projects and make sure that the knowledge is transferred to related co-workers
* Contribute to external and internal exposure of Volvo Cars' deep knowledge and safety engagement
* Develop an extensive competence network both nationally and internationally to keep active, updated and credible in the world's biomechanics community
* Act as a "go to person" in the area of expertise
* Teach, mentor and coach within the competence area

Required qualifications

* MSc equivalent or higher with focus on human and engineering, preferably biomechanical engineer or engineer with good knowledge in human anatomy and physiology
* Genuine interest in traffic safety
* At least 10 years knowledge and experience of biomechanical related work within automotive safety
* Good knowledge in human anatomy and physiology and how specific injuries occur and what specific injury consequences are
* Good analytic ability and talent to do syntheses, holistic view
* Experience of statistical analysis and advanced safety technology development
* Recognised leadership in relevant technical specialty
* Proven skills in scientific writing
* Experience as a representative in research boards and complex legal matters, is meritorious
* Comprehensive experience from and network within Authorities, Academy and Industry, is meritorious
