Avalanche Studios is the division dedicated to ambitious, externally published, AAA open world games like Just Cause, Mad Max, and Rage 2 - our upcoming title Contraband is a co-op smuggler's paradise set in the fictional world of 1970s Bayan.

Contraband is a brand new IP published by Xbox Game Studios, and we're now looking for a talented Technical Artist to join our team at the Malmö office.

The Position

Avalanche Studios Group and its creative division Systemic Reaction is looking for a Technical Artist to join our team in Malmö, South Sweden.

As a Technical Artist at Avalanche, you are passionate about solving complex technical art tool challenges so your artists can work smoothly and can achieve their goals. You have ample opportunity to learn from and engage with a variety of complex problems across different projects.

At Avalanche, you will acquire expert knowledge of our in-house tools and processes including Apex, Avalanche's in-house engine (written in C++), as well as a variety of our in-house art pipeline tools (primarily written in Python). These tools are integrated into Maya, Substance Painter, Substance Designer and Photoshop so you will script for these packages. Knowledge of other related packages like Houdini will also come in handy.

Naturally scripting is only a part of the work. After working on a tool, you will also need to update the documentation and handle support requests from artists. And you will balance your task with minimal input from your producer. As a TA you must be a solid communicator that has no trouble interacting with different people across all disciplines. Thankfully you are not alone, so you can ask for help just as well as you give it.

Furthermore you will need to have an understanding of real-time rendering, shaders and PBR. Ideally you have experience writing HLSL/GLSL shaders.

Finally you should have experience profiling and optimizing art assets to get projects ready for shipping.

This role gives a huge opportunity for learning, ownership and impact on the project and is a key role within our highly skilled and modestly sized team working exclusively on self published projects.

Required Qualifications

• Experience in the game industry
• Understanding of asset creation pipelines and workflows
• Expert in Python scripting
• Experience scripting for and working with Maya
• Good understanding of real time rendering
• Good communicator and collaborator both verbal and written
• Familiar with Substance Designer & Painter
• Experience with Qt
• Passion for user-friendly design

Desired Qualifications

• Experienced with Houdini
• Experience with C++
• Experience with other 3D packages and adjacent knowledge

Avalanche has Technical Animation departments that deal with rigging, as well as dedicated VFX departments that deal with VFX, so while that kind of knowledge will be useful for you, it will likely not be part of your work.

Living and working in Sweden comes with a variety of government benefits (like health-insurance and paid vacation days), but Avalanche's Benefits don't stop there. From company parties and care packages sent to your home to health-allowances and financial Bonuses, we take care of you. But what we really pride ourselves on, is our work-life balance and flat hierarchy.

Employee promise

We provide goals, instead of instructions, and the opportunity to do the best work of your career.

Our Values

At Avalanche Studios Group, we believe in worlds beyond limits, we are committed to developing a diverse and inclusive workplace. We are an equal opportunity employer and value diversity at our company. Everyone at Avalanche Studios Group has a shared responsibility to create an open and inclusive work environment where everyone is treated equally and with respect. Being part of our world is not contingent on where you're from, your gender, or sexual orientation. It's all about your passion and creativity.

How to Apply

We will only consider applications that consist of both a cover letter and a CV. In your cover letter you should include why you want to work at Avalanche Studios Group and which games you are currently playing. For this role you need to be able to work full-time in our Malmö office.

To apply for this position please register below. Apply as soon as possible as we review applications continuously. All further information is provided under non-disclosure agreement only.
