The role is based at AstraZeneca's dynamic R&D site in Gothenburg Sweden where you will be part of a stimulating and collaborative environment where scientific questions are addressed in an innovative and sustainable way.

Cardiovascular, Renal and Metabolism (CVRM) is one of AstraZeneca 's core therapy areas. Together we push the boundaries of science to turn ideas into life changing medicines for patients suffering from Heart Failure, Diabetes or Chronic Kidney Disease.

The Medicinal Chemistry Department within Early CVRM is an essential player in the discovery and design of our drug molecules. We are agnostic to molecular modality and utilizes an array of therapeutic approaches. We drive our scientific leadership through partnerships and alliances with world specialists which will give you the opportunity to access the most advanced knowledge, tools and opportunities to stay at the forefront of scientific research.

What you'll do

You will have a key role as a team leader with the opportunity to impact our future portfolio and drug discovery programs across subject areas, both internally and through external collaborations. As a member of the Medicinal Chemistry Leadership team you will lead and influence the direction of strategy and take a responsible role of the operational aspects within the department.

In this role you will manage a team of creative, openminded and experienced Medicinal Chemists in the area of New Modalities Chemistry. As team leader you will be responsible for the performance of your team to ensure that expectations on high quality project contribution are met. You are also responsible for individual development of the team members.

You will also lead Medicinal Chemistry in projects across various phases in the discovery phase and demonstrate active participation and contribution to the scientific direction of our drug research programs across the portfolio, in the CVRM disease area.

You are up to date with the latest scientific development and influence the medicinal chemistry direction by creating an open and curious atmosphere with ability to quickly adapt to new opportunities across various modalities, automation, AI and Machine Learning. You are also encouraged to continuously build your scientific reputation through external disclosures in the form of publications, presentations and building collaborative networks.

Essential for the role

You have a Ph. D. degree in a relevant scientific field of Synthetic Chemistry or Medicinal Chemistry related to New Modalities such as peptides, RNA or drug conjugates together with at least eight years post-doctoral research experience in drug discovery, preferentially from an industrial setting. You are internationally recognized within the field of New Modalities and Drug Conjugates applied to drug discovery as evidenced by your external disclosures and publication record. The role requires ability to lead the medicinal chemistry program of discovery projects and prior experience and track record of delivery is a must.

With your excellent interpersonal, communication and collaboration skills you have the ability to operate efficiently in a multidisciplinary matrix research environment, providing leadership and insight in drug discovery.

* Previous experience of line-management and ability to develop robust teams with various cultural and diversity aspects.
* Excellent understanding of when to use various chemical modalities in drug discovery, various hit finding strategies, multi-parameter optimization and IP strategies
* A genuine openness to novel scientific approaches and eagerness to drive projects with the most relevant drug modalities
* Excellent strategic and influencing skills
* Excellent social and interpersonal skills, showing respect and inclusion while engaging team members and colleagues to perform at their best.
* Sound knowledge of related functions like DMPK, safety, bioscience, pharmaceutical development and early clinical development
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills as well as excellent English is required.
