IMED Respiratory, Inflammation & Autoimmunity (RIA) AstraZeneca R&D, Gothenburg, Sweden, seek to recruit a Senior Level Team Leader, Computational Chemistry to the department of Medicinal Chemistry

The arena

The Respiratory, Inflammation & Autoimmunity IMED develops novel drugs for the treatment of conditions such as asthma and COPD. The CC/CB team supports the RIA drug discovery programs by applying state of the art in silico methods for modelling, compound design and data analysis. The team also provides bioinformatics and cheminformatics expertise into our project teams. The team operates in a highly cross disciplinary environment in close collaboration with scientists from the Chemistry, Bioscience, DMPK and Pharmaceutical Science departments to advance the RIA project pipeline.

Job description:

Leads the RIA computational chemistry team providing state-of-the-art computational chemistry support to RIA projects in all project phases. Lead science in the field of computational chemistry applied to drug discovery with a demonstrable impact on projects. Provide a level of scientific expertise and leadership that commensurate with the delivery of high quality project milestones to agreed timelines. To devise, champion and develop computational chemistry scientific capabilities, aligned to project demands and need for strategic development of the RIA computational capabilities. Provide disciplinary scientific leadership cross RIA IMED departments and represent the department at interdisciplinary meetings internally as well as externally. Maintains and develops the RIA Computational Chemistry capabilities aligned to the RIA strategic goal to increase the use and impact of in silico tools. Work alongside other senior scientists to identify key strategic investment and improvement areas to strengthen the AZ computational chemistry capabilities.
Identify opportunities for strategic collaborations and publication opportunities. Continuously publish and present results from own scientific work.

As team leader at the RIA Medicinal Chemistry Department responsible for the day-to-day staff management. This includes staff development, performance and salary review management.

Education:
PhD in chemistry or corresponding experience in a relevant scientific discipline within drug discovery. Track-record of staff and scientific leadership applied to computational chemistry based drug discovery.

Requirements and Qualifications:
Excellent interpersonal skills, approachable, ability to prioritise workload and manage challenging staff situations
In-depth scientific knowledge in the area of computational chemistry confirmed by track record of project deliveries, publications and external presentations
Experienced from the project application of modern computational methods to dissect ligand-protein interactions, structural dynamics and kinetics for the optimization of ligand interactions and on target pharmacology
Familiar with recent developments in areas relevant to computational chemistry e.g. medicinal chemistry, structural chemistry, biophysical chemistry.
A proven track record delivering multiple milestone transitions
Excellent communication and influencing skills
Knowledge of the pharmaceutical drug discovery and development process
A proven track record of delivering tasks in a timely manner

Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Part of the RIA Medicinal Chemistry Department leadership team responsible for department delivery and scientific progress
Lead team staff; ensure compliance with AZ SHE standards and code of conduct. Ensure quality of the team scientific delivery
Manage performance review process and salary setting, secure that up-to-date development plans are in place for individual staff members
Lead the strategic development of the RIA IMED in silico design and prediction platform, implement and utilize the most recent computational methodology
Actively impact the RIA IMED projects ensuring that state of the art computational methodology is being applied to meet project objectives within agreed timelines
Drive RIA IMED scientific reputation by identifying and progressing publication opportunities internally, across AZ and/or together with external partners.
Identify and engage with leading internal and external experts, prepare grant applications and lead collaborations
Promote the science of medicinal chemistry across AZ by providing Science stories, Post Cards, and communication around publications.
