AstraZeneca is now looking to recruit an Associate Director/Associate Principal Scientist to lead a preformulation team focused on new modalities within the Advanced Drug Delivery (ADD) function that is part of Pharmaceutical Sciences at AstraZeneca in Gothenburg.

Pharmaceutical Sciences is a department within our Innovative Medicines and Early Development (IMED) Biotech unit. The Pharmaceutical Sciences' mission is to transform molecules into investigational medicines, meeting the unmet needs of future patients. Our portfolio of projects span traditional small molecules, proteins, oligonucleotides to RNA based therapeutics across AstraZeneca's therapy areas. Advanced Drug Delivery (ADD) resides within Pharmaceutical Sciences with a mission to provide novel products to AstraZeneca's clinical pipeline.

We now seek a talented, motivated Associate Director to lead a preformulation team in Gothenburg, Sweden. The role will lead the proof-of-concept testing of new drug delivery technologies, and help us drive the delivery of nucleotide based and protein therapeutics, drug targeting, and local delivery for the IMED portfolio. As ADD Preformulation Associate Director you will provide discovery support, input to compound and excipient design/selection as well as lead development and scale-up of formulations including analytical methods for clinical development, when the activities are conducted via partnering or outsourcing.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

• Managing a team of preformulation scientists including performance management, rewards & recognition, coaching and individual development

• Lead Generation/ Lead Optimization (LI/LO) Discovery support and input to compound design from a pharmaceutical sciences perspective including compound developability assessment for new modality candidate selection.

• Early formulation development, biophysical & analytical methods including contributions to Chemistry, Manufacturing and Control (CMC) regulatory submissions in collaboration with clinical formulation and analytical teams.

• Leading clinical formulation and analytical development when conducted via outsourcing or partnering.

• Derive a science & technology strategy for the team built on scientific collaborations that enhance AstraZeneca's capabilities and reputation.

• Develop a highly engaged team focused on innovation, continuous improvement and delivery, recognized for providing scientific leadership internally and externally, and creating a great place to work.

• Collaborate with other IMED departments to deliver new drug products and technologies, and enable smart loading of product development activities.

• Explore external partnering and sourcing opportunities across the early development activities and secure a robust external network which delivers portfolio and capability needs.

• Seek out and share insights into new technology/ novel product platforms and regulations, and support their adoption within ADD and AstraZeneca.

• Lead the team to secure intellectual property opportunities and maintain Astra Zeneca's freedom to operate

Essential Requirements

• Ph.D degree in a relevant scientific discipline.

• Industrial experience including with outsourcing/partnering in either new modality formulation or analytical method development spanning discovery and early development

• Aptitude and willingness to lead, coach, develop and manage a team of scientists.

• Track record as a scientific leader, providing scientific challenge and direction to team members.

• Ability to influence drug substance and product design.

• Knowledge of the overall drug research and development process from Discovery through to Launch, and an appreciation of how Pharmaceutical Sciences disciplines contribute to R&D and the broader business

• Understanding of the Astra Zeneca's disease areas to enable influencing of drug and drug product design.

• A leader of a product development scientific skill discipline including external visibility through publications, presentations and networking activities. Capable of and desire for continuing to develop self in this arena.

• Innovative, with a passion for driving scientific excellence and a continuous improvement mind-set.

• Strong project management skills, with experience of managing external collaborations.

• Ability to effectively communicate, network and build strong collaborative relationships with stakeholders across disciplines and cultures, internally and externally.

• Thorough understanding of principles, applications and management of Safety Health and Environment (SHE) and Good Manufacturing and Laboratory Practices (GMP/GLP).

Desirable Requirements

• Industrial experience including with outsourcing and partnering in both new modality formulation and analytical method development disciplines.

• Exposure to multiple disciplines in Pharmaceutical Development, CMC, and related functions

• Prior experience of leading, coaching and developing a team of scientists

• Experience of leading and managing change processes
